The Maxwell-Gunter Child Development Program provides quality care for military and civilian children ages 6 weeks to 5 years old or until they start kindergarten.  The program consists of a Child Development Center at Maxwell and Gunter Annex, and family day care.  Care is available from 6:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Payment is based on family income and ranges from $59.00 to $126.00 per week.

There are various programs offered at the centers and are based on the age of the child and offer a range of specialized developmental activities.  In the 2-year-old class, children participate in small group activities such as story time and group games.  Ages 3 and up receive teacher interaction and are highly involved with group activities.  A part-day enrichment program is set up to give 3 and 4-year-olds of stay-at-home parents a chance to be around other children and participate in learning activities two or three days a week.  The program runs from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.  Mothers Morning Out gives stay-at-home parents of 1 and 2-year-olds childcare, two days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. A full-time program for children ages 2, 3, and 4 is also available.

Air Force policies for childcare operations mandate the best possible programs, children to caregiver ratios, nutritional requirements and staff training. The Maxwell and Gunter Annex Child Development Centers are accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children and are certified by the Department of Defense.  The Department of Defense inspects the centers every year on paperwork, food services, child records and teacher-child interaction.  Last year, the center scored higher than average on the unannounced inspection.  In addition, Child Development Center officials place a high priority on safeguard security.  All staff members have to pass a National Agency Check before working at the centers.

Parents interested in the Maxwell Child Development Center may call (334) 953-6667 and the Gunter Annex Child Development Center at (334) 416-3185.

The Maxwell and Gunter Youth Centers offer Before and After School Programs Monday through Friday beginning at 6:30 a.m. for children ages 5-12. Maxwell Elementary School students are driven to school by bus at 7:00 a.m.  Fees for this service vary according to household income. Many of the local public and private schools offer before and after school child care programs. Several of the local YMCA's and childcare facilities provide transportation for the students enrolled in their before and after school program.

Maxwell also has a New Parent Program through the Life Skills, Family Advocacy Program with a full time community health nurse specialist to assist first time parents.  The specialist makes home visits and assists new parents during the adjustment periods.  The Family Advocacy Office also offers special parenting programs on a regular basis for expecting parents, first-time parents, and parenting programs from infants to teens.
