Vehicle Ownership
Members of the U.S. Armed Forces stationed in Florida, but who maintain their legal residence outside of Florida, are classified as nonresident military and are eligible for lower registration fees. The owner must submit a copy of their military orders or a current Leave and Earnings statement and sign a Military Nonresident Affidavit before a notary. Proof of Florida insurance is mandatory.
State Driver's License: A Florida Operator's License is required 30 days after you become a permanent resident. The legal age for a Florida Driver's License is age 16, however learner's permits are issued at age 15-please check with the local drivers license office for specific information on Florida license requirements. If you have a valid license from another state, you need only take a vision test. An original Social Security card and two ID's with full name and date of birth are required. With tickets or violations, a road signs test and vision test are required. Handbooks are available at the exam stations.
Auto Insurance: Florida law requires that all automobile operators have no-fault insurance. Under the no-fault law, a motorist's insurance company pays for treatment of any personal injuries received as a result of an auto accident, no matter who is at fault, up to $10,000. You must show proof of this insurance to obtain automobile tags.
Installation Vehicle Registration: Vehicles operated on base by persons assigned to MacDill must be registered and must display the base decal. Registration and decals may be acquired at MAcDill Visitor Center (outside the Dale Mabry Gate) (813) 828-2737. The requirements for permanent registration are a valid driver's license, military or civilian identification card, and proof of insurance.
