personal contact to talk to them about all the activities available on base and
in the area. Send your name, address, age, and a list of your special
interests and skills to the Youth Activities Center, 2400 Pacific Avenue
Building 425, San Pedro, CA 90731. Your name will be given
to someone with similar interests and you will receive a letter of
welcome.

children 5 years to 12 years a wide variety of educational and
entertaining experiences. This children are offered activities such

school breaks. They are closed on all Federal Holidays.
The
Teen Center and the Youth Center at LAAFB are the best in the Air Force, a model
for all other bases!!!
SCHOOLS: Some elementary
and middle schools have no indoor gym or eating area. Kids sports are
largely outdoors, and they eat indoors only when it rains. Campuses
are "closed" at lunchtime and many are gated. Also some schools have
dress codes or uniform policies. Transportation to and from school
may not be available in all school districts. Parents may organize
carpools, and many teens drive to school. Be sure to visit the school
you plan to attend. Ask questions about classes, clubs, uniforms and
sports.
DRIVING IN LA: The rule of the road is ALWAYS allow
plenty of time to get anywhere in LA. Local radio stations offer
traffic information. Just be careful, and watch out for the other
guy.
DRIVER'S LICENSE: Military members don't need to get a
California license, but their family members do. Kids under the age
of 18 must have their application for a license signed by their parents, and
persons under 18 may not be employed to drive a motor vehicle. To
drive a motorcycle anyone under the age of 21 has to complete a training program
offered by the California Highway Patrol. Call (800) CC-RIDER for
information. For more information on California driving laws, see
CONTACTS/LINKS for telephone numbers and locations of the Department of Motor
Vehicles.
SAFETY: Security Forces at LAAFB works closely with
the Los Angeles Police Department and other city police departments to keep the
base safe. Security Forces are always present at the Fort MacArthur
gates in San Pedro and at Los Angeles AFB in El Segundo. The SF teams
are available to talk to you and your parents about safety on base and for your
trip to and from school. Contact them at (310)
363-2123.
CURFEW: The Los Angeles AFB curfew policy is
intended to provide a safer community and better protects children from becoming
victims of crime or becoming involved in delinquent
behavior. Consistent with the Los Angeles Municipal Code (LAMC), the
base curfew restricts minors (children under the age of 18) from being outdoors
or in public places unless accompanied by an adultbetween the hours of 10:00
p.m. and 05:30 a.m. Exceptions to the base curfew policy apply only
when a minor is attending an event, or going to or returning directly home from
an event (such as a youth program activity, movie, school dance, etc.) or
involved with an emergency such as a fire, natural disaster, or automobile
accident. Parents are still required to notify the base entry gate
the child will be entering during curfew hours. In the event parents
fail to provide pre-notification of a child's arrival time, a dependent/civilian
misconduct report will be completed. This policy supersedes
guidelines currently referenced in AFI 31-209/SMC Supplement 1. Point
