Parents at Los Angeles Air Force Base are encouraged to
participate in classes and programs offered at various locations on the base and
in the community.
There are many wonderful books and materials given out
at the Bundles for Babies class. Other services include touring the
local community hospitals that provide delivery services, breastfeeding
counseling, support groups, and information on the WIC program.
Good
sources of information for parents are the Life Skills Support Center, the
Family Support Center for information and referral to on- and off-base agencies,
and the Child Development Center.
The Programs offered by the Family
Support Center are:
COOPERATIVE PARENTING AND DIVORCE which is meant to
assist parents in shifting their role from former spouses to
co-parents.
"SHIELDING YOUR CHILD FROM CONFLICT" is meant to help educate
parents regarding the impact of parental conflict on their child's development
and help parents learn about children's issues in divorce.
COMMON SENSE
PARENTING is designed as a practical approach to help parents be more positive
with their children and to use more effective discipline. Parents are
taught skills that help them encourage positive behavior, discourage negative
behavior, and teach alternatives to problem behavior.
1-2-3 MAGIC offers
simple, precise and easy to learn methods that work effectively in disciplining
two to twelve year olds. It works well for learning attention deficit
children.
SYSTEMATIC TRAINING FOR EFFECTIVE PARENTING OF TEENS (STEP) is
meant to help parents understand misbehavior and to guide the teen from
unproductive misbehavior to positive, productive goals and
behavior. STEP/Teens also help parents promote their teen's positive
self-image and to build cooperation and positive communication. It
presents positive discipline methods designed to promote responsibility.
