"Kids in Touch with Kids" is a pen pal program sponsored by the
Youth Center. If you are moving to Little Rock AFB, you can
correspond with a pen pal from the base and find out about the area before you
arrive. Ask your parents if they received a "Kids in Touch with Kids"
form in their sponsor package. Fill out the form and mail it back to
the Youth Center. If you don't have a form to fill out you can still
request a pen pal by writing to the Youth Center at the address below. The Youth
Employment Skills (YES) Program is an on-base youth volunteer program,
underwritten by the Air Force Aid Society (AFAS). The focus of the
program is to offer high school aged dependents of active duty enlisted airmen
and officers an opportunity to learn valuable work skills while having a
positive impact on their base communities. The YES program allows
high school juniors and seniors to "bank" volunteer dollar credits toward their
post-secondary education/training at a rate of $2 per hour volunteered in an
on-base position, to a maximum of 250 hours ($500 credit) per student grade
level. Students may accumulate as much as 500 hours, for a potential
$1,000 maximum, during their freshmen through senior years. In
addition, the participating base youth program will "bank" base community
credits at a rate of $1 for every hour volunteered per student, up to a maximum
of $10,000 per program year. See the Youth Center Director for
information on applying for this program.
Non-appropriated Fund (NAF)
positions are available for applicants who are 16 years old and would like to
work with children. There are a variety of positions available such
as recreation aids and assistants, laborers, custodial workers and many
more. If you are interested in applying for any position, go to the
NAF personnel office where they have lists that show current and projected
openings and the qualifications required. NAF is a great place to
find summer or part-time employment opportunities. Our Youth Center
was recognized as the Air Combat Command's Youth Center of the year for
1995. The center has also been recognized as Air Education Training
Command's "Youth Center of the Year" for 2001. The Youth Programs
objective is to provide a year-round program of indoor and outdoor activities
for all eligible youth. Children are provided the chance to
participate in wholesome leisure time activities which develop mind and body,
encourage fair play, and promote good fellowship. The programs are
partially funded by the United Way. They are proud to be affiliated
with the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. A variety of events are
offered for dependents ages 5-18 of military personnel (active duty/retired) and
DOD personnel living on or off the base.
The building includes a game
room with pool tables, ping pong, large screen TV, air hockey, vending machines
and booths, a multi-purpose recreation room where basketball games, dances and
special events are held, gymnastics room, dance area, and classrooms for the
School Age Program. Other facilities include three baseball fields,
one softball field and soccer fields.
Children ages 5-8 must be
accompanied by a parent or sibling over age 16 unless they are participating in
an activity that provides continuous staff supervision. Children up
through 6th grade may stay until 6:00 p.m. nightly. If you are a teenager moving
to Little Rock AFB, you will probably find that teens here have the same
interests, hopes, dreams, and concerns that you have. Most teens keep
busy going to school, being involved in extracurricular activities such as band
or sports, working part-time jobs, volunteering, etc.
After arriving in
the area, the easiest and quickest way to meet people and make new friends is to
get involved in the local community. Pursue clubs and organizations
in school that interest you, become involved in a local religious organization,
take part in recreational opportunities and volunteer your time.
The base
Youth Center has monthly programs for TEENS ONLY which include "Moonlight
Basketball" with trophies provided, and a Teen Dance complete with a
DJ! Teen time is 6:00 p.m. until closing nightly, unless there is an
activity planned for a specific age group. This allows teens to
socialize and compete in activities without pre-teens present.
