The mission of the Family Advocacy Program (FAP) is to support
Air Force readiness. The goal of the FAP is to promote family
readiness by enhancing the health, welfare, and morale of the Air Force
family. The family plays an integral role in the achievement of the
Air Force mission by having a direct impact on service members' capacity to
perform his or her assigned duties. It is Air Force policy to minimize the
negative impact of and, where possible, prevent family maltreatment and to
identify, report, assess, and treat families experiencing family
maltreatment.
The FAP at Kirtland AFB has components designed
to achieve this goal: Outreach offers various prevention services (i.e. support
groups, marital counseling, anger management, and domestic violence awareness
workshops), as well as family maltreatment intervention. The New Parent Support
Program is a voluntary enrollment program designed to assist families with
support and education during pregnancy and enhance a smoother beginning as a new
family. A Family Advocacy Nurse Specialist follows the family from
pregnancy through birth and up to the infant's third birthday. Services are
provided by home visits and clinic or telephone consultation.
