Volunteerism is a way of life in America. We are
people of enormous civic responsibility and social conscience. Many
very worthwhile organizations depend heavily on volunteers for their
existence. Whether it is volunteering at a local hospital, becoming a
tutor for the literacy project, helping to feed the hungry, or working in your
favorite candidate's campaign, donating your time to a worthy cause is very
satisfying and worthwhile.
From a career standpoint, volunteering is also
a wonderful way to get your foot in the door to a permanent
position. The people you meet are great contacts, and the work you do
can be translated into experience on a resume. All in all, the time
you spend volunteering benefits the organization, the people you help, and
yourself.
Any of the non-profit agencies can also be a great place to
volunteer your time, to make contacts, and to contribute to a worthy cause while
getting involved in your community. Digging in to help others in need
of assistance is a great way to push away the blues. Many have
volunteer programs which are always looking for help.
