No matter how well you have prepared for your move, emergencies
do happen. Before you leave, make sure you have all the important papers with
you - not packed with your household goods. Make sure you have
important numbers such as your Command Duty Officer or your Sponsor at your new
installation. Your Sponsor can be invaluable in case of an emergency
while in transit. The American Red Cross is always available for emergency
aid. Contact the nearest chapter listed on the local phone directory.
Navy-Marine Corps Relief can also provide financial assistance to meet
unforeseen required travel and/or related maintenance expenses such as
transportation, lodging or food, when applicable due to extraordinary costs
involved with permanent change of station (PCS).Carry your important papers
(orders, ID cards, passports, shot records, travelers checks, etc.) with
you--not packed in your luggage or your household goods. Write down
telephone numbers for your relatives, your sponsor, and your
Unit. They will be invaluable in case of an emergency while
travelling. The American Red Cross and other agencies are available
for emergency aid. Red Cross phone numbers are usually listed in the
white pages of the local phone directory. They can help with
emergency financial assistance and contacting people that will need to know
where you are and what's happening.
If it is a car emergency, call AAA or
your motor club. If you do not belong to one of these organizations,
now might be a good time to think of signing up. For a nominal fee,
most of them provide emergency towing, starting, jumping services.
Always
have some savings set aside for emergencies.
