No matter how well you've planned, emergencies do happen.  What should you do in case of an emergency while you are traveling? What should you do if you need funds to rent an appartment, fix a broken car, buy food, etc.?
Navy/Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) can provide financial emergency assistance based upon need, through loans or, when there is a particular hardship, grants.  Categories of financial assistance include:  Basic living expenses (food, shelter, utilities), medical not covered by TRICARE/CHAMPUS, dental not covered by FMDP, funeral expenses, emergency transportation, essential car repairs, pay and allotment problems, disasters and assistance for widows, mothers and children.
The American Red Cross is always available for emergency aid anywhere you may be.  Contact the nearest chapter (phone numbers are usually listed in the white pages of the local phone directory).  They can sometimes help with emergency financial assistance and contacting individuals that will need to know where you are and what's happening.  If you are requesting emergency funds, please make sure you tell the American Red Cross that you are requesting the funds through the Navy/Marine Corps Relief Society (N/MCRS).  The American Red Cross can cross check with their sources to confirm you are in the military and that N/MCRS will approve your emergency funds.  Upon arrival back at NS Ingleside you will need to contact N/MCRS to determine a payback schedule.
The American Red Cross can also help in times of emergency.  Quick communications with home about family emergencies is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including verification of death or serious illnesses of immediate family, birth announcements to fathers deployed overseas, and health and welfare reports resulting from a lack of communication over a long period of time.
Sailors and their families should be aware that if they are not near a Navy Base they can receive emergency aid from the Army Emergency Relief, Air Force Aid Society, and/or the Coast Guard.  Once the loan/grant is approved the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society will buy the loan back from the other service.
