SHIPMENTS WITHIN CONUS
There is limited authority for POV
shipments within CONUS when service members are medically unable to drive, there
is a homeport change, or there is not enough time to drive. Contact your
Transportation Office for additional information.
SHIPMENTS
OCONUS
You are allowed to ship one privately owned vehicle (POV) at
government expense to or from an overseas area when permitted (some overseas
areas restrict shipment of POVs). The entitlement to ship an otherwise eligible
POV from overseas to the United States is not dependent on whether a POV was
shipped to the overseas area. The entitlement to ship a POV to the overseas area
and the entitlement to ship a POV from the overseas area are separate. For the
purpose of this shipment, a POV is a vehicle owned by the member or a dependent
of the member (member must show proof of ownership/registration or lease
agreement).
When you or a designated agent pick-up the POV at the
destination terminal, you must have: Proper identification - military ID,
Driver's license; copy of DD Form 788, (Private Vehicle Shipping Document);
Power of attorney if your spouse or agent picks up the POV. If your car is not
picked up within 45 days from the postmarked date of notification of arrival,
you are subject to the vehicle being placed in storage at your expense. When you
pick up your vehicle, carefully inspect the exterior and interior to determine
if there is any new damage. Make sure that items left in the POV at the origin
terminal are still there. You could save time and money by calling
before taking your vehicle in. You need the following documents before taking
your car to port: PCS orders and all amendments; proof of ownership or letter
from your lien authorizing car shipment. In addition, vehicles need to be in
good mechanical condition.
Contact your Transportation Office for
additional information as to what Port of Embarkation you will be authorized to
take your vehicle for shipment.
