LOCATION:
Hickam Air Force Base is located on the island of Oahu, approximately nine miles from downtown Honolulu and situated between Pearl Harbor and the Honolulu International Airport.
HISTORY:
Named for Lieutenant Colonel Horace Meek Hickam, an aviation pioneer killed in a flying accident at Fort Crockett near Galveston, Texas. Hickam Field was dedicated on May 31, 1935 and officially activated in 1938. In 1957 Headquarters, Pacific Air Force was established at Hickam Air Force Base. The unification of Pacific Air Forces was a historic "first" in which all USAF fighting forces assigned to the Pacific and Far East areas were consolidated under one command.
MISSION:

PACAF's primary mission is to plan, conduct and coordinate offensive and defensive air operations in the Pacific and Asian theaters. The mission of the 15th Airlift Wing is to enhance PACAF's power and reach by ensuring world-class en route support, maintaining operational ready forces and providing superior customer service.
SPONSORSHIP:
Once your gaining organization has received confirmation of your PCS, military and DoD civilians will be assigned a sponsor. If you are experiencing any personnel issues or have not heard from your sponsor, contact the Airman and Family Readiness Flight at (808) 449-0300. Department of Defense civilians should contact their selecting official or personnel office for a sponsor. Contact the Civilian Personnel Office (808) 449-0121, if you are not contacted by a sponsor.
Your sponsor should provide you with information about the local community, housing, schools, employment, the base and any other information you request. Your sponsor should also provide you with information about your gaining organization including the name of your First Sergeant and Commander. Keep your sponsor informed during your PCS. If your arrival plans change, be sure to contact your sponsor. Your sponsor will be responsible for welcoming you to the base and your organization. You will be given information about In-Processing from your Orderly Room. To establish a general delivery address for your mail/belongings, fax a copy of your orders to (808) 448-0348. You will need to pick up your mail within 3 months and boxes within 15 days. TEMPORARY QUARTERS
Contact the Royal Alakai at (808) 448-5400 to secure temporary lodging as soon as you have your orders and an arrival date. If nothing is available on base, they will refer you to a hotel in the local community. If you are headed to temporary lodging in Waikiki, follow the signs to "H1 Honolulu." From H1 take the "Nimitz" cut-off which becomes Ala Moana Blvd after approximately seven miles. Take a right on Kalia Rd for the Hale Koa Hotel, or continue on Ala Moana for one more block, to Kalakaua Ave.
RELOCATION ASSISTANCE:
The Airman and Family Readiness Flight offer classes and individual relocation assessment and referral. Smooth Move seminars are provided on a recurring basis. Sponsorship training is now available on-line..
CRITICAL INSTALLATION INFORMATION:
Government Owned Vehicles, both on and off-installations and Privately Owned Vehicles will not use cell phones unless the vehicle is safely parked or they are using a hands-free device. Violation of this policy will result in the loss of on-base driving privileges for 30 days. This policy applies to all uniformed military personnel, DOD civilians, contractors, family members and any other non-DOD drivers operating a motor vehicle on all PACAF installations.
Effective June 30, 2003 Pets that qualify will be authorized a "direct release" from the airport if all pre-arrival requirements are completed AND all required paperwork/payments are submitted at least 10 days prior to arrival.
