Family Advocacy
Services
1. Family Advocacy Strength-Based Therapy (FAST)
Services: FAST services are designed to help identify strengths and
develop skills to improve family wellness and prevent family
maltreatment. These services are on a voluntary
basis. Couples that are having problems with communication and
conflict resolution can receive up to eight couples's sessions with no formal
record of their care.
2. Assessment and Treatment of
Maltreatment: Provide assessment of family dynamics, power and
control and family stressors that contribute to child and spouse
maltreatment. Provide individualized treatment to address these
issues.
3. New Parent Support Program: This program offers
education and support through one-on-one home visits with a registered
nurse. It prepares expectant parents to handle pregnancy, birth, and
help all parents with children up to three years of age. The nurse provides
information on all aspects of pregnancy, infant and toddler
care.
Family Advocacy Classes/Education:
1.
Parenting: Classes offered for parents of various age groups intended
to teach child development and ways to effectively parent while reducing the
risk of parental frustration.
2. Play And Learn Sessions: It is a
weekly playgroup for infants (0-12 months) and their parents that consist of
organized interactive play sessions with weekly topics or special events.
3.
Referral to Infant/Child CPR Class: Periodic class on infant/child
CPR. Designed for expectant and new parents.
4. Anger
and Stress Management: This class is comprised of six weekly sessions
focusing on anger effects, emotional arousal, communication skills, combating
"dirty" fighting, and communication skills.
5. Child Abuse Prevention:
Annual briefings offered to various family service groups. Covers causes and
prevalence of child abuse and the procedures for recognizing and reporting
family maltreatment. Contact Family Advocacy Outreach Manager at

Life Skills offers
educational classes to all beneficiaries without the need to establish a Life
Skills Support Center Record. At the present time individual and
marital therapy are limited to active duty personnel. No referral is

Life Skills Services:
Alcohol and Drug Abuse
Prevention
1. Alcohol Drug Abuse Prevention and Treatment (ADAPT) Program and
Drug Demand Reduction Program (DDR): Provides drug abuse prevention on base and
in the local community and are the base point of contact for Drug Abuse
Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) information.
2. Substance Abuse Services:
Includes prevention, education, assessment, outpatient counseling and referral
for Active Duty personnel.
Life Skills
Classes/Education:
1. Anger and Stress Management: This class is provided by
Family Advocacy and is comprised of six weekly sessions focusing on anger
effects, emotional arousal, communication skills, combating "dirty" fighting,
and communication skills.
2. Assertiveness Training Program: The
Assertiveness Training Program is a four-week class focused on helping you learn
the skills to relate with others in an effective style that is neither
aggressive or submissive, a style that respects both your own needs and the
needs of others. The program consists of four 90-minute classes that meet once a
week for four weeks.
3. Couples Communication Training: Training
is provided using the Preventive Relationship Enhancement Program (PREP), a
couples communication training covering assertiveness skills, active listening
techniques, and conflict resolution. It is offered once a week for
four weeks in a classroom atmosphere to couples where both partners are willing
to work on enriching their relationship.
4. Mastery of Emotions: A four-week
program that teaches skills for better managing emotions, thoughts, and
behaviors. Starts the first Thursday of each month and runs for 4
Thursdays from 9:00-1030a.m. at the Life Skills classroom. Basic
skills taught are physical relaxation and learning to identify and interrupt
worried or alarming thinking patterns, and thereby avoiding harmful levels of
anger, depression and anxiety.
5. Suicide Prevention/Violence Awareness
Training: Life Skills is the point of contact for arranging and
monitoring progress on this calendar year requirement for all active duty Air
Force and DoD civilian personnel. This 30 minute training is
conducted by Hickam Community Action Team (HCAT) trainers and can be arranged
for Commander's Calls and other unit trainings by calling Life Skills at (808)
