There are many affordable and free activities and events in the area for Marines and their families. There isn't enough space in this booklet to list them all. No matter where your interests lie in the way of recreation, skiing, hunting, fishing, boating, sports, camping, sightseeing, history, theater, you can find it in this area. The Washington area is rich in history. Historical monuments and sites are located in every area. Washington boasts many fine museums and other free or almost free points of cultural and arts interest. There are beautiful gardens and parks and all types of outdoor recreation. You are only a few hours drive from the mountains or the beaches. The Kennedy Center and the Ford Theater are known world-wide and they offer both matinee and evening performances. You can visit the White House or listen to Congress in session. You can visit the Smithsonian, the Air and Space Museum, the Museum of History, and all the other fascinating places available for your enjoyment. The Morale Welfare and Recreation (MWR) is now known as Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS). Henderson Hall staff provide a variety of leisure activities for active duty military members and their family members, as well as DoD civilians. Below is a listing of some of the programs and facilities available.
Recreational Facilities: Smith Gym, Gym Annex, Racquet Ball Courts, Basketball/Tennis Courts, Recreational Gear Issue, Swimming Pool,and the Enlisted Club.
The Marine Corps Exchange contains a Subway and Pizza Brothers resturaunt, located on the bottom floor.
The Enlisted Club offers an all hands lunch from 1100-1500, Monday through Friday; enlisted only lounge from 1500-closing, Monday through Friday; various forms of entertainment, such as DJ's, every Friday and Saturday night; Bosses/Guest Night every third Friday; pool tables; and catering services.
The Recreational Gear Issue, Smith Gym, has recreational items available for Active Duty Headquarters Battalion Marines. Equipment may be checked out, free of charge, for a three day period. They have tents, camping gear, football, softball, racquetball, tennis, basketball, and golf equipment, mountain bikes, and rollerblades with safety gear, and much more.
