Dental care, including preventive dentistry, general dentistry,
oral surgery, periodontics, pedodontics, removable prosthodontics, fixed
prosthodontics, and endodontics, is available from the three Dental Treatment
Facilities at Fort Stewart and one facility at Hunter Army
Airfield.
Dental Clinic 1 is in Bldg. 440, next to the Fort Stewart Arts
and Craft Shop on Gulick Avenue; Dental Clinic 2 is located on the second floor
in Winn Army Community Hospital; and Dental Clinic 4 is on the corner of Gulick
Avenue and 13th Street, Fort Stewart. The Hunter Army Airfield Dental Clinic
Command is in Bldg. 150 on Haley Avenue.
Dental care for active-duty
military personnel is available at these clinics, depending on the individual's
unit of assignment.
Dental care for family members at the DENTAC is on a
limited basis only. Under DoD regulations, family members of active-duty
sponsors with two or more years remaining (one year if returning from OCONUS) on
active duty are eligible for enrollment in the TRICARE Family Member Dental Plan
and must receive their care through private sector dental offices. Care for
those eligible is limited to "backup" emergency care in which a civilian
provider has not been able to provide the necessary treatment. Family members
not eligible for the insurance plan and their family members, have been
authorized to receive emergency services and limited space-available care on a
standby basis.
Treatment for dental emergencies after normal hours of
clinic operation, on weekends and holidays can be provided for all eligible
beneficiaries. Dental emergencies include pain not relieved by medicine
available to the patient, uncontrolled bleeding, swelling, trauma, or elevated
temperature due to dental or oral infection. Active duty are required to use
military dental facilities. Persons with dental insurance coverage must attempt
to receive care from their civilian dentist before seeking treatment from the
Dental Officer on Duty. Those without Family Member Dental Plan (FMDP) insurance
should seek care from civilian dentists listed in the telephone directory. In
Savannah, civilian emergency dental service is available by calling
912-351-7700. The FMDP is accepted.
