Departing from Fort Sill, take I-44 for 81 miles; turn off onto I-240. Remain on I-240 for 92 miles; turn off onto I-40. Continue on I-40 for approximately 94 miles; turn off onto U-64. Once you arrive at Fort Smith, Arkansas, Fort Chaffee is located jus 8 miles southeast.
Fort Chaffee lies in the town of Barling, next to Fort Smith, in Sebastian County, Arkansas.
Fort Chaffee is owned an operated by the Arkansas Army National Guard. It has a small PX (DPP not accepted), and a 1-person barber shop.
There is a 9-hole golf course (open to civilians, too) with a snackbar.
There is also a second snack bar on post.
There is one gymnasium.
Fort Chaffee has no commissary, laundry/dry cleaners, on-post housing (or Official government off-post housing), schools, gasoline station, bank or
credit union, childcare. These services are mainly provided by the towns close to Fort Chaffee (Barling, or Fort Smith).
There are no medical facilities (guard units have one small TMC which they
open and run on the weekends they perform drill duties).
Active duty personnel, when they arrive, join Tricare Prime Remote, while their families switch tricare regions, Fort Chaffee is REGION 6.
Medical and dental needs are handled through Tricare, via civilian establishments in Fort Smith. Fort Smith has 2 large hospitals. Non-emergency surgeries and other medical care are handled at Sparks Regional Medical Center.
All inprocessing is done at Fort Chaffee, at the assigned unit.
The active duty units at Chaffee consist of 3 battalions: 1-393(TS)(IN),
2-393(TS)(IN), and 3-393(TS)(FA), along with a small HQ element from 2d Bde, 75th Div (TS). The actual Bde HQ is at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.
Personnel assigned to Fort Chaffee work with National Guard units from Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Texas.
Close towns are: Fort Smith, Barling, Alma, Greenwood, in Arkansas, and Sallisaw in Oklahoma.
