Under the Alabama Child Labor Law, teenagers age 18 and older may work at almost any job, except certain jobs where alcoholic beverages are served for consumption on the premises.  Minors 18 years of age or older may wait tables, but may not serve alcoholic beverages.

Child labor laws protect teens from excessive work hours and dangers in the workplace.  One of the ways the Alabama law provides protection for both the teenager and the employers is through the use of work permits.  The state law requires employers to have permits for any employee under age 18.  Teens 14-17 years of age must have a work permit which is kept on file by their employer.  County and City Boards of Education issue work permits.  Fourteen and fifteen year olds can be disapproved for a work permit if their school grades are not satisfactory.

Youth age 12 and older may be issued permits which authorize them to distribute newspapers or periodicals on fixed routes.  Otherwise, the minimum age of employment in Alabama is 14, however, most local businesses will not hire teens who are not 16 years old.

Volunteer Opportunities:  The Fort Rucker American Red Cross (ARC) Station sponsors the Outstanding Youth Volunteer Program for youth between 12 and 17 years of age.  The program runs from mid-June to mid-August each year.  Youth must be willing to volunteer a minimum of 4 hours a week.  For additional information, contact the ARC at (334) 255-1055,  or the Teen Center at 255-9108/9127, and the Fort Rucker Volunteer Program at (334) 255-9277.
