Child Protective Service (CPS) is the civilian agency that
investigates reports of child abuse and neglect that occur in the civilian
community and recommends supports for civilian parents if child maltreatment has
occured and treatment is appropriate. CPS will also be involved in
reports of child maltreatment involving military families. CPS, the
Family Advocacy program, and the military and civilian law enforcement agencies
work together to protect children and ensure parents obtain the help they
need.
The goal of Child Protective Services is to identify, assess and
provide services to children and families in an effort to protect children,
preserve families, whenever possible, and prevent further maltreatment to ensure
child safety and well-being. Child Protective Services is
non-punitive in its approach and is directed toward enabling families to provide
adequate care for their children.
