Soldiers assigned to Fort Riley ARE REQUIRED TO process through the Community Homefinding, Relocation and Referral Services Offices (CHRRS) prior to renting or purchasing a home. The office is located in the basement of the housing office.
Off-Post Housing Rentals must be approved by the CHRRS Office Prior to move-in of a military family. This must be done even if your prospective landlord says the property has been inspected, contact CHRRS to verify that the proper inspection has taken place before signing a lease. This ensures the safety and comfort of the sponsor and his/her family.

For ALL Service Members: 1, 2, and 3-bedroom unfurnished apartments are available in the housing community. Most landlords require you to sign a 12-month lease.
You will find that most landlords require a security deposit equal to one month's rent when moving into an off post rental unit. Pet deposits can be a charge of up to half a months rent. If the rental is furnished, then another month's rent can be added to the security deposit. The landlord holds the security deposit until all cleaning and damages have been determined at checkout.

LEASE:
Make sure it has the names of you, the owner and your address. The description of the structure you are renting, dates of your rental, the amount and due date...when it can be raised and penalty for late payment. The renewal date, how to end a lease, the deposit and what it covers. Termination when and how. Maintenance and repairs...who is responsible for what issues. Can you decorate, sublet, etc. When the owner can enter your home, if a lien is on the property and who is responsible for injury to yourself and/or guests. What utilities you pay. Issue of pets.
READ YOUR LEASE BEFORE YOU EVER SIGN IT! REMEMBER THAT HOUSING MUST "OK" YOUR RENTAL BEFORE EVER SIGNING A LEASE OR LEAVING A DEPOSIT!
