Anchorage offers special education to both the gifted
and disabled students. Special education in the Anchorage
School District consist of preschool, elementary, and secondary
programs. The preschool special education program is
for children 3-5 years of age with special needs. There is
a strong parent support and training element. Elementary special education
options for services are available at every elementary school in the
district. Students with intensive needs are serviced at neighborhood
sites or in learning centers distributed throughout the
district.
Secondary special education programs are provided for junior
high and high school students experiencing disabilities that interfere with
their ability to learn.
The gifted program is for students in the age
group of 3-18. These students are served through pull-out, self-contained, and
acceleration plus enrichment in math, language arts and science
programs. Enrichment and leadership training though mentorship
opportunities are available in the high school program.
