An Overview
Fort McCoy's mission is to support the readiness of the force by serving as a training center and a support site for power-projection missions.
As a Total Force Training Center, Fort McCoy's primary responsibility is providing quality training facilities for reserve- and active-components military forces. Fort McCoy also fulfills the role of one of the Army's Power Projection Platforms. Ft McCoy is a ready and capable mobilization site, equipped to prepare and deploy military units for any contingency.
As a world-class installation, Fort McCoy's continuing goals is to provide customer service and facilities and to enhance the quality of life for all who train, work or live here. The Fort McCoy community truly is unique, with active, reserve and civilian components working together for the betterment of all facets of life at the installation.
Training Opportunities
Located in the heart of the upper Midwest, Fort McCoy is the only US installation in Wisconsin. Fort McCoy lives its motto, "Total Force Training Center." The installation has provided support and facilities for the field and classroom training of more than 100,000 military personnel from all services each year since 1984.
The Fort McCoy complex is situated on 60,000 acres, 46,000 of which are available for maneuver and training.
Fort McCoy's superb location, quality terrain and four-season climate provide units with significant year-round training opportunities.
The installation offers access to a full spectrum of facilities, ranges, training areas and classrooms that support individual and collective training compatible with environmental standards. An air-to-ground impact area and airborne drop zones for both personnel and equipment also are available.
Fort McCoy has 27 ranges designed to Army standards and maneuver corridors for Paladin artillery and the Multiple Launch Rocket System. Recent training infrastructure additions include an Urban Training Complex, a Combat Pistol Qualification Range, a Modified Record Fire Range, a Multi-Purpose Machine Gun Range and a Simulation Facility. A Shoot House opened in 2007. Forward Operating Bases create a realistic training environment similar to what deploying personnel will experience in theater.

LOCATION: Fort McCoy is situated on approximately 60,000 acres in the Coulee Region of West Central Wisconsin. It is located on Hwy 21 between Sparta, known as the "Bicycling Capital of America" and Tomah, "Gateway to Cranberry Country" with more than 2500 acres of cranberry marshes dotting the region. Sparta and Tomah are each about eight miles from the installation. Fort McCoy is approximately 35 miles east of LaCrosse and 105 miles NW of Madison. The installation serves as a Regional Training Center that annually supports the year-round training of more than 100,000 active and reserve component U.S. military personnel from all branches of the Armed Forces.
HISTORY: Fort McCoy is named for Major General Robert Bruce McCoy, a distinguished veteran of World War I. The son of a Civil War captain, McCoy was a prominent local resident who served as a lawyer, district attorney, county judge and mayor of Sparta, Wisconsin. Camp McCoy was founded in 1909. It served as a supply base for the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) during the great Depression. It served as a POW and relocation camp during WWII. It housed 15,000 Cuban refugees in 1980. It was a major mobilization site during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm and continues to serve as a major power projection platform for the global war on terrorism.
MISSION: Fort McCoy's primary mission is to underpin readiness of the force by serving as a training center and support site for power projection missions. As a Total Force Training Center, Fort McCoy's primary responsibility is providing quality training facilities for reserve and active-component military forces.
POPULATION SERVED: Approximately 2800 civilians and 600 military personnel work on the installation. It annually supports the year-round training of more than 100,000 active and reserve component U.S. military personnel from all branches of the Armed Forces. Fort McCoy also serves a retiree population of about 440K.
SPONSORSHIP: Contact your new unit or personnel office to request a sponsor. Sponsors should send a welcome packet and SITES booklet provided by Army Community Service to incoming personnel. They should also answer questions you may have about your assignment and the local area. All active duty Soldiers assigned or attached to Fort McCoy or within a one-hour commute must report to the Family Housing Office at 2168 South 8th Avenue, M-F 7:30am-4:00pm, within 30 days of reporting to Fort McCoy.
Anyone who is assigned to or attached to US Army Headquarters Company Garrison must report to the inprocessing section of the Military Personnel Office upon arrival. They are located at 2187 South J Street and are open from 7:30am-4:00pm M-F. Bring your 201 file and leave form. If arriving after hours or on a weekend, call 2-3960 from on post or 608-388-3960 from a local community to check in, and report in person the following workday.
Those who are assigned to tenant activities should report directly to their units who will provide the inprocessing paperwork.

TEMPORARY QUARTERS: The Lodging Office is located at 35 South M Street just inside the main gate and is open 24 hours a day. You may also make reservations in advance by calling 608-388-2107/3646. Pets are not allowed in temporary quarters. Kennels are available within the local communities.
RELOCATION ASSISTANCE: Relocation Readiness is designed to make your transition into our community an easier, more pleasant experience. Please stop by Army Community Service, 2111 South 8th Avenue, to inprocess and take advantage of the many services that are available. Our lending closet provides essential items while you are awaiting the arrival of your household goods. There is an Installation Newcomer Orientation generally held the 2nd Wednesday of each month. Wisconsin has four distinct seasons so be prepared with appropriate clothing if arriving during the winter months.
Fort McCoy is located in a low to moderate income area. Average wages in Monroe County were 80.5 percent of the statewide average of 34,749 in 2004.
Newer three to four bedroom homes may average 150,000. Apartment & housing rentals range from $450-$800 monthly depending on size and condition. Housing availability in local communities is limited, especially for 3 and 4 bedroom units. Please be aware that for most rental units, utilities are not included.
Vehicle operators on a DoD installation and operators of Government owned vehicles shall not use cell phones unless the vehicle is safely parked or unless they are using a hands-free device. The wearing of any other portable headphones, earphones, or other listening devices (except for hand-free cellular phones) while operating a motor vehicle is prohibited.
The Fort McCoy Child Supervision Policy requires that children age 9 and under will not be left to self-care on the installation or in military housing at any time. Various supervisory requirements for children ages 10 and older are also addressed within this policy. Copies of the policy are available through Army Community Service and School Age Services.
