Emergency Relief (AER) provides assistance for unexpected financial emergencies
in the form of interest-free loans and grants for soldiers and retirees and
their families. To apply for AER assistance, come in to the Fort
Lewis AER Section located at Army Community Service in Waller
Hall. AER is open from 7:30am to 4:30pm, Monday through
Friday. If you experience an emergency financial need that cannot
wait until normal duty hours, please contact the American Red Cross Emergency
Services Center at (toll-free) 1-877-272-7337.
AER offers college
scholarships to qualifying dependent children of soldiers and
retirees.
Army Emergency Relief (AER) AER provides interest-free loans
and grants to soldiers who find themselves in a financial emergency, which is
both, unexpected and due to conditions beyond their control.
Typical
Cases Assisted: Payment of rent to prevent eviction or foreclosure,
non-receipt of pay lack of basic necessities such as food and utility payments,
travel expense for emergency leave due to serious illness or death of a
grandparent, funeral expenses, to include expenses for a parent of the soldier
or spouse, loss of funds (includes loss of pay or other funds), attributable to
theft; (a police report is required), essential POV repairs for safe
operation.
Typical Cases Not Assisted: Payment or
consolidation of outstanding debts, travel expenses for other than emergency
leave, civilian court fees, fines, lawyer's fees, bail and taxes. A purchase of
items for convenience or luxury, prolonged illness, fire or other disasters,
continuing assistance or education assistance: AER's educational
assistance program is a secondary mission providing financial assistance to
unmarried dependent children of soldiers, in the form of
scholarships. They may pursue their education in vocational training,
preparation for acceptance by service academies, and undergraduate level college
education.
