TRAFFIC LAWS: The speed limit in Kentucky is 65 mph on Kentucky
interstates and most parkways, however it is 55 mph on other
roads. Kentucky has a seat belt law that requires all passengers in
the vehicle to wear seat belts at all times. Kentucky law requires
that all children 40 inches tall or less must be placed in a federally approved
child restraint seat when traveling in an automobile.
The Kentucky law
states you do not have to wear a helmet if you have had your operators license
for more than a year. Kentucky has a permissive "right turn on red"
law, unless a sign forbidding such turns is posted at the
intersection.
DRINKING LAWS: Hardin County is a dry county;
however certain restaurants in Radcliff and Elizabethtown, that serve and seat
more than 100 customers, do serve alcohol beverages. The surrounding
counties of Jefferson, Meade and Bullitt Counties are wet
counties. If you are convicted of DUI in Kentucky you will face
serious consequences. More stringent sanctions are applied for second
and subsequent convictions. Drinking and driving are not tolerated in
this area.
ACCIDENTS: US 31W is dangerous, especially between Fort Knox
and Louisville. Obey the speed limit and drive
carefully. If you are involved in an accident in Kentucky, notify the
nearest state police post.
DRIVERS LICENSE : If you have a valid drivers
license from another state, you must take the written and eye tests, but you do
not have to take the driving test. If you choose to, the above
requirements must be met; however, your out of state license is recognized in
Kentucky. Testing is from 0800-1130 and 1300-1530 Monday through
Friday. You must make and appointment to take the drivers test, but
not the written test. Office hours are 0800-1600. The cost
is $8.00 unless the driver is under 21, in which case is slightly
higher. If you currently have an out of state license and want a
Kentucky license, you must have an original social security card if your social
security number is not on your current license.
DRIVER'S LICENSE FOR
TEENS: Teens must be 16 years old to apply for a driver's permit and
after 6 months they may apply to take the driver's test. Teens will
need a birth certificate, social security card, the natural parent or a court
appointed guardian to sign required paperwork.
VEHICLE
REGISTRATION : If you purchased your vehicle overseas, you will be required to
pay a 6 percent sales tax on the vehicle if you license it in
Kentucky. If you purchased your vehicle in another state and paid
less than 6 percent sales tax in that state, you will have to pay the difference
between the percentage you paid and the 6 percent. The percentage is
paid on the book value of the vehicle. Also, the County Court Clerk's
office does not accept out of state checks. You will need to take
cash or a money order if you do not have an in-state
account.
