Barstow, with a population of approximately 23,000, has limited
employment opportunities. Employment is for the most part in service
type positions such as retail sales, food service, and office staff
positions. Wages are usually minimum wage or slightly above. The
major exceptions are the school districts. Contractors at Fort Irwin
offer a wider variety of positions, often with higher wages. Positions range
