Fort Gordon is located 9 miles SW of the city of Augusta, the center of the second largest metropolitan area in Georgia. This area consists of 13 GA counties and 5 in SC, and is known as the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA).
Augusta is home to the South's largest medical college and several hospitals. Professional and support medical positions are available in support of hospitals and physicians.
Furthermore, this area hosts over 100 public and private schools, which require educators and support personnel.
In addition, the CSRA includes a steadily growing industrial base made up of numerous major manufacturers which constantly require skilled and unskilled blue-collar workers. Predominant manufacturing firms are apparel, textile, food, and nonelectrical machinery. Lumber and wood products facilities are also abundant. Many industrial positions are temporary, seasonal, and of a part-time nature. Because of this, numerous employment agencies and services offer many opportunities and benefits. Residential type construction jobs are steady; and skilled maintenance, repair, and equipment operator jobs remain steady. Secretarial and clerical personnel, especially those with data entry/computer skills, are always needed. The most often requested software skills are with Word, PowerPoint, and other Office applications.
The fastest growing industry in the CSRA is the service industry, which makes up close to 70% of all nonagricultural employment. This service industry includes retail positions in building materials and hardware, general merchandise, food stores, automotives dealers, gasoline service stations, apparel stores, home furnishings, eating and drinking establishments, drug stores, etc. On the other hand, professional type positions are more competitive and usually require related experience, education, or license.
Army Community Service publishes an Employment Assistance Guide that includes a listing of the area's major employers in several categories. Information on job-hunting is also included.
