Youth Services ATTN: Sponsorship Program

FORT DRUM NY  13602-5000

OR EMAIL: DCAYSDEV@drum.army.milNew York State requires that you have to be sixteen, with working papers, in order to be hired for employment.  These papers can be obtained at your local schools' Guidance Office.

We have the usual fast food outlets:  McDonalds, Arby's, Pizza Hut, Burger King, Dunkin' Donuts, Jreck Sub Shop, etc.  We also have other types of employment for teens:  in the summer many state parks, and community recreation programs look for seasonal workers, clothing retailers are always looking for good and honest workers.  Don't get discouraged if you don't get a job right away, keep trying.

Also, Volunteering with the Youth Volunteer Program is a great way to build marketable job skills and obtain references for future employment applications.  Good luck...The Youth Services staff warmly welcome you to Fort Drum Military Community.  Our purpose is to provide activities which promote moral, social, and personal development for family member youth in grades 1-12.  We are very proud of our Youth Services program and hope that we offer activities you will enjoy.  We pledge our best efforts in services to you and your family.

The youth center is located in building P10790 on Chapel Drive, which is a block behind the AAFES PX and Commissary shopping center.  the youth center has 18,000 sq ft of programable space and it includes two lounges, a gymnasium, snack area, computer lab, and instructional classroom.  We also have dedicated ball fields adjacent to the youth center.

Registration days and times are Monday - Friday, 2:30 - 7:00pm.

Youth Services include programs in the areas of Leisure & Recreation, Fitness & Sports, Life Skill & Leadership, and Mentoring, Intervention and Support Services, and Youth Sponsorship.

We offer a wide variety of activities each month.  A calendar of events and other community publications for you to find out what is happening at YS.Fort Drum offers Remington Park for a natural swimming and picnic area.  The Youth Services Center is always a good place to hang with your friends.  The Pine Plains Bowling Center on Ft Drum is a hot place to be on the weekends, and the YS gym is a great place for teens interested in various fitness workout routines.

In Watertown (10 miles from post) teens enjoy the Ultimate Goal Sports Complex and Dry Hill Ski Area.

Teens were recently surveyed from the Teen Council Meeting held at Youth Services, here are the questions they were asked and their responses:

1.The enforcement of curfews:  Fort Drum does not have a curfew for teens and does not experience many teen problems.  Several local communities that have Army Community Housing have curfews.  These curfews are for teens under 16 years of age and are local village/city laws, not Fort Drum regulations.  All curfew's, regardless of location, are effective at 10:00PM each night.  The following villages/cities have curfews and have Army Community Housing in their jurisdiction:

Gouverneur, NY
Philadelphia, NY
Lowville, NY
Carthage, NY
West Carthage, NY
Watertown, NY

Parents of teens caught in violation of these local laws will be cited.

2.  The level of violence:  Not too high, graffiti more than fighting.

3.  Local hangouts, which ones should be avoided and why:  Walking in the woods for short cuts, at times you may find a small group of trouble makers.

4.  Are there any other safety issues:  There are no specific areas that pose a special threat to teens.  As with any community, there is a local criminal element that threatens every citizen.  Drug usage has increased over the years and the criminal element associated with this activity has targeted teens.  There is very little violent crime in this area.

5.  What is the availability and variety of sports, social and recreational opportunities:  *cheerleading  *basketball  *football  *soccer  *baseball
*track  *volleyball  *tennis  *swimming  *monthly dances  *holiday dances
*proms  *homecoming  *musicals.

6.  What is atmosphere between teens and law enforcement officials on the installation and in the communitites?
Generally, conditions/atmosphere between the local law enforcement community and teens is very good.  As with any situation, there are instances that occur that are not always friendly.  However these instances are few and far between.  The Fort Drum law enforcement community sponsors "job shadow" and "internships" with local schools.  In addition, McGruff the Crime Dog, Bike Rodeos, and career days are supported.  Local civilian law enforcement agencies also sponsor internships, DARE programs, and in some cases Police Explorer programs.

7.  Saved the best for last!!  The popular radio stations in the area are:
106.7 "The Border" and 107.9 in Syracuse.
