LOCATION
Welcome to Fort Drum and the North Country in the picturesque Thousand Islands Region of Northern New York State. This installation is located in one of the most unique and beautiful areas in the United States. Fort Drum is approximately 30 miles from Canada, with the Great Lakes to our west and the Adirondack Mountains to the east.
Winter and summer sports opportunities abound. The Adirondack Mountains, Lake Ontario, and the St. Lawrence River in the Thousand Islands Region are prime tourist attractions. The tri-county areas of Jefferson, Lewis, and St Lawrence surrounding the installation are rich with history and tradition. Sponsorship is available at Fort Drum.
HISTORYFort Drum has been used as a military training site since 1908; however the Army's presence in the North Country may be traced back to the early1800's. Presently, Fort Drum consists of 107,265 acres. It's mission includes command of active component units assigned to the installation, provide administrative and logistical support to tenant units, support to tenant units, support to active and reserve units from all services in training at Fort Drum, and planning and support for the mobilization and training of almost 80,000 troops annually. Fort Drum is currently one of the elite Army Division fighting the War on terror.
MISSION Provide equitable, efficient and effective management of Fort Drum resources to support readiness and mission execution of combat-ready forces, while providing for the well-being and security of Soldiers, civilians and family members; improving infrastructure and preserving the environment.
POPULATION SERVEDFort Drum serves a wide range of DoD personnel, families, civilians,joint services. Fort Drum engages in training pertinent to the continued effort on the global war on terror.
RELOCATIONThe Relocation Readiness program at Fort Drum is a full fledged assistance program designed to help families with the relocation process. Soldiers and family members relocating to the installation will find a number of comprehensive services like newcomers spouse orientation aimed at providing new arrivals with information about Fort Drum and the surrounding communities. TEMPORARY QUARTERSWhile there are hotels and motels in the Fort Drum community and surrounding areas most Soldiers and family members newly arriving to Fort Drum will be temporarily housed at the Army lodging Fort Drum Inn located on Po Valley road.
CRITICAL INSTALLATION
INFORMATION Fort Drum in the coming years will become the permanent home of 4th Brigade currently located at Fort Polk, Louisiana. Housing is still an issue but most families will find out that wait time has drastically come down from previous numbers. In the winters Fort Drum does get below zero degree temperature from time to time. Car seats are a MUST in the state of New York. All Pets residing on the Installation must be micro-chipped per garrison policy number 19.
WHEN YOU ARRIVE AT THE SYRACUSE AIRPORT, LOOK FOR THE FORT DRUM INFORMATION SIGN. INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE ON TRAILWAYS BUS SCHEDULES HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS.

ALL INDIVIDUALS OPERATING A MOTOR VEHICLE IN NEW YORK STATE MUST BE PROPERLY LICENSED TO DRIVE A MOTOR VEHICLE (VALID DRIVER'S LICENSE (ANYSTATE). ALL INDIVIDUALS OPERATING A MOTOR VEHICLE IN THE STATE OF NEW YORK MUST HAVE (AT A MINIMUM)VEHICLE LIABILITY INSURANCE.
ALL VEHICLES OPERATED IN NEW YORK MUST HAVE A VALID STATE REGISTRATION(from any US state - you are not required to register your vehicle in New York unless you desire to do so).
Fort Drum Regulation 190-2, dated 15 February, chapter 2, para 2-17 requires ALL VEHICLES OPERATED ON FORT DRUM ROADS MAINTAIN A VALID STATE INSPECTION CERTIFICATE. This inspection may be from the state where the vehicle is registered or from an official New York State Inspection Station. Motor vehicles operated on Fort Drum are required to be inspected at least once a year. Fort
Drum Auto-Craft Center, Bldg. P-11120, offers New York State inspections. They are done by appointment, for more information contact (315)772-5785.
SPEED LIMIT IN NEW YORK STATE IS MPH ON I-81, NY
THRUWAY #90, AND RTE 87.
ON ALL OTHER NON-RESIDENTIAL ROADS THE SPEED LIMIT IS 55 MPH.
CELLPHONE USE IN NEW YORK STATE MUST BE HANDS-FREE, YOU MAY BE TICKETED AND FINED IF CAUGHT TALKING ON YOUR CELLPHONE WHILE DRIVING.
ALL CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 4 YEARS MUST BE IN A CHILD RESTRAINT SEAT. NO EXCEPTIONS. IN NEW YORK STATE YOU MUST HAVE YOUR HEADLIGHTS ON IF YOU ARE USING YOUR WINDSHIELD WIPERS.
