If you are relocating to Fort Dix, call the Youth Center at (609)
562-5061 or the ACS Relocation Readiness Program at (609)
562-3271. We will be happy to connect you with a Fort Dix teen that
will give you information about schools, sports, recreational activities and
what's up at Fort Dix.
To request a teen sponsor send e-mail to
amada.espinoza@dix.army.mil or al.stansbury@dix.army.mil, or call the above
telephone numbers.
The ACS Family Member Employment Program has summer
job opportunities for teens 16 years of age and older at Great Adventure Theme
Park. AAFES runs a Burger King on the installation. There is also an opportunity
to earn money for young teens fourteen years of age and up by doing odd jobs
for community residents such as pet sitting, mowing lawns,
babysitting, ironing, house cleaning, gardening and other general
labor. For more information contact Mr. Rod Martell, Employment
Readiness Manager, at 1-800-877-2380.
A wealth of creative and supervised
on and off post youth activities are available through the Youth Center and Teen
Center for youth between the ages of 5 and 19. The activities are
designed to be fun and promote physical fitness and develop lifelong recreation
skills. As an added benefit, youth programs may also help young
people overcome the stress associated with relocating and adjusting to new
friends and peer groups at a new duty station. The Youth Center has a
game room, full sized basketball court and dance and gymnastic
area. Classes are offered in dance and self-defense.
Youth
Sports offers programs to eligible youth. Sports include soccer,
baseball, T-ball, softball, volleyball and cheerleading on a seasonal
basis. There are also coaching opportunities for adults.
Dear
Teens, Please contact Amada Espinoza by e-mail at amada.espinoza@dix.army.mil or
by phone at (609) 562-3721; or Al Stansbury at al.stansbury@dix.army.mil or by
phone at(609) 562-5061 if you would like to get in touch with a Fort Dix teen
who will help you when you arrive to Fort Dix. A teen will have a
better understanding of your problems and feelings about moving to a new
community.
The biggest things most teens worry about is making new
friends, and being accepted. Most of us are sad because we have to
leave our friends. Your parents are also stressed because they also
have to leave their friends, change their jobs and move into an entirely new
community. Relocation causes stress among all members of the family,
but it can be a rewarding and challenging experience. One way that relocation
can be rewarding is by enjoying the experience of exploration, leaving problems
behind and starting anew.
The Pemberton Township School System offers a
wide variety of programs to enhance your quality of life. Some of the
programs offered include but are not limited to the following: Band,
Football, Basketball, Cheerleading, Wrestling, Chorus, Theater (including a
summer theater program), and a TV studio run by the Pemberton Township High
Schools students.
A major question that any teen/preteen would want to
know when moving to a new city is, "What is there to do?' Well, NJ is the mall
capital of the world, drive in any direction and your bound to hit a mall like;
Burlington Center, Cherry Hill Mall, Moorestown Mall, Echelon Mall, Freehold
Raceway Mall, Deptford Mall, Franklin Mills Outlet (in Philly), Quakerbridge
Mall...
If you want to see a flick check the McGuire AFB
theater. If you want to check out a first run attraction get your
parents to take you to the Green Tree Plaza, which contains an 8 screen theatre
(AMC 8), or you can try something closer like the 20 screen theatre (Regal)
across from Burlington Center Mall.
How about professional football,
basketball, hockey and baseball games? Oh boy, you are in the right
location. Good news for sports fans. Fort Dix is well-situated for a
variety of sporting endeavors whether it is cheering on the pro teams in Philly
or the pro teams in New York. Come cheer the Eagles (football) and
Phillies (baseball) at Veterans Stadium, or cheer on the 76ers (basketball),
Flyers (hockey), or Wings (Lacrosse) at the First National State
Center. If you want to support some home state fair you can check out
the Meadowlands Sport Complex, home to the current Champion, Jersey Devils
(hockey), or watch the NJ Nets (basketball). Giants stadium is also
home to the NY Giants and NY Jets. And if you travel across the
Hudson you can check out the Mets, Yankees (baseball) or the Knickerbockers
(basketball). Tickets can be bought by calling TicketMaster (215)
336-2000. And like always you can also participate in any number of
events closer to home, right here at Fort Dix.
Oh, how about concerts? The Blockbuster-Sony Music
Entertainment Center at the Camden Waterfront offers entertainment for the whole
family. Concerts are also held at the Meadowlands Sports Complex.
Six Flags Great Adventure, an action amusement park, filled with roller
coasters and water rides, is approximately 20 minutes away. Another
area to look for fun, but at a slightly greater driving distance (45 minutes)
are the Jersey Shore and Philadelphia (philly). And for those teens with a
slightly adventurous edge, the Capital of the World, NYC is an hour and a half
north on the Jersey Turnpike.
Your Morale Welfare and Recreation (MWR)
facilities are located at Doughboy field for easy access to the Bowling Center,
Go-Carts, Indoor (w/waterslide) and Outdoor Swimming pools, Batting Cage,
Miniature Golf, and Griffith Field House (gym). For the civilian
variation you can always check out Laurel Fall on route 38 although I recommend
the entertainment complex here on post... it's a lot closer and
cheaper!
The above are a few samples of the things that you can do here
at Fort Dix, New Jersey.
