BEFORE YOU MOVE:

- Relocation Counseling.  Attend PCS Briefing and Relocation Counseling
- Sponsorship. Contact your unit for a sponsor or go to the Detrick homepage and request a sponsor
- Finances.  Fort Detrick does not have a Finance Office therefore, your travel voucher will take longer process.  Relocating can drastically affect your budget, it is advised to go your Army Community Service and complete a budget.
- Cost of Living.  Frederick is a suburb of the Metropolitan Washington D.C. which makes it expensive to live which is reflected in the Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) rates.  (See the Housing Allowances category for more detailed list).  Visit the Employment Readiness and Transition Office for Spouse employment assistance. Members in PCS status, other than those living in barracks, should request Dislocation Allowance (DLA) through their finance office.
- Household Goods shipments are arranged by the Transportation Office/Personal Property Office. During "high transition season," May - September, allow more time for household goods delivery.
- Unaccompanied Baggage.  Ship only essentials.  Our lending closet has items for sleeping, cooking and for the baby that you can borrow.      
- DITY (Do-It-YourSelf/Personally Procured Move), you must visit your local Transportation Office or the Personal Property Office to arrange your move.
- Inventory your household goods.  Donate or dispose of items that you no longer need.  Maintain proper documentation to support any claim you may need to make with insurance or at the claims office (remember you only have 70 days to make a claim after delivery).
- Notify your utility companies and request termination of services.  Leave a forwarding address, for the final bill and for any deposit to be returned to you.  Ask for a letter of credit; you may receive a waiver of the deposit requirement.
- Notify childcare and schools of your pending move.  Handcarry childs shot records and school records.  
- Provide change of address information to: friends, family, subscriptions, all medical/dental/veterinarian providers, schools, insurance, vehicle service facilities.
- Make sure to obtain pet records.
- Civilian/Government Employment.  Request leave without pay or leave of absence, rather than resign.  Obtain copies of all work records and training received.  Ask for a letter of reference.
- Inspect your vehicle for the long drive or before shipping.  Ensure that you hand carry all documents needed for registration.
- Permissive TDY for house-hunting MAY be granted by your current organization - up to 10 days.  
- If you are enrolled in EFMP, out-process with current installation.  When you arrive, check-in with new installation EFMP Coordinator/Manager or Special Needs Coordinator.
- Update DEERS if you have recently married and after the birth of a baby.
- Notify current landlord and or housing office of your pending move. Request a pre-inspection and correct or negotiate any damages early.  Leave a forwarding address for your deposit return.  
- Contact housing for local policies/procedures and availability of government housing/barracks.
- Hand carry documents needed to purchase a home.

TRAVEL PLANNING:

- Concurrent travel. Authorizes you to travel at governments expense with your family members.  It must be stated on your orders.  
- Temporary Lodging.  Fort Detrick does not have temporary lodging. Statements of non-availability are not required.
May - September is PCS "High Season" and lodging may be limited.  Reserve lodging in advance.  (See the Temporary Lodging category for more detailed information).      
- Travel Voucher.  You may need receips to complete you travel voucher.  Make sure to keep all receipts - food, gas, lodging, pet expenses, etc - while in transition.  

CHECK-IN PROCEDURES:

Army personnel.  Report to your new unit and be met by your sponsor. After hours, arrivals should report to the staff duty noncommissioned officer at 1532 Porter Street to sign in.  After reporting to unit, the Soldier must come to the Military Personnel Division (MPD) located in 1520 Freedman Drive, Room 139A, to pick up the Installation In-processing Checklist. In processing is conducted each morning except Thursday from 9 to 11 a.m. No appointment is required. The sponsor is responsible for escorting the new arrival to the various agencies for in-processing. When reporting to MPD, the Soldier should bring a duty position memorandum, permanent-change-of-station orders, military personnel file, medical, dental, and education records.  

Navy personnel should report to the Naval Medical Logistics Command at 1681 Nelson Street upon arrival for in-processing.

Armed Forces Medical Intelligence Center Military members should in-process at the Armed Forces Medical Intelligence Center's, Military Personnel Office, 1607 Porter Street, upon arrival.

Civilian personnel should report to the Civilian Human Resource Office located at 810 Schreider Street, Suite 106, to in-process. Hours of operation are 0800 - 1630.  Building 810 requires an access key to enter.  You must call CPAC from the foyer to gain entry to the building.

Housing Office is located in 1520 Freedman Drive, Room
202.  The housing office is responsible for assigning adequate space to the single Soldiers in pay grades E-1 -
E-5. Customer service hours are Monday through Friday from 0730 to 1600. In- and out-processing hours are Monday through Friday from 0900 - 11:00, and 1300 - 1500.  Military personnel reporting for duty at Fort Detrick MUST report to the Housing Office before seeking off-post rental housing.

Unaccompanied Enlisted Personnel Housing (UEPH):  Single Soldiers in pay grade E1-E5:  Orders and duty telephone number are required for in-processing.  Soldiers requiring UEPH must also have a current (within 60 days) end-of-month Leave and Earnings Statement.

Single Soldiers in the pay grade E6 and above will be authorized basic allowance for housing (BAH) at the without dependent rate and will be required to reside off post.  Additionally, geographical bachelors (Soldiers entitled to BAH at the "with dependent" rate, who are voluntarily separated from their family members) are not authorized assignment to permanent party UEPH.
