There are many things to do at Fort
Detrick. Directorate, of Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Quarterly
Events Calendar lists recreational opportunities and can be found at the Detrick
homepage.
FITNESS CENTER: The Captain Jennifer J. Shafer Odom
Physical Fitness Center is located at 1507 Porter Street. The center features a
variety of fitness equipment, volleyball and basketball courts, men's and
women's saunas, aerobic classes, and locker room facilities. The
center is open to active duty military, retirees, Reservists, National Guard,
civilian and contract employees, and family members. There is no user
fee. To join, participants must take a certification course on how to
use the equipment.
Hours of the center are Monday through Friday, 0600 to
0900, Saturday and Sunday, 0700 to 1500, and holidays, 1300 to 1700. The center
is closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day. Hours may
change.
BOWLING CENTER: The Fort Detrick Bowling
Center, 915 Sultan Street, offers grilled items and sandwiches during the hours
of operation. Winter hours are: Monday through Friday from 1400 to 2100,
Saturday from 1300 to 1900, and Sunday from 1300 to 1800. Summer
hours will be posted at a later date. Hours are subject to
change.
ACTIVITIES CENTER: The Community
Activities Center (CAC) is located at 718 Porter Street. The center contains a
multi-purpose room, which is available for private parties, classes, wedding
receptions, promotion parties, and special events.
SPORTSFUNATIC: The SportsFunatic is located in the Community
Activities Center, 718 Porter Street. Its menu includes pizza, various grilled
and fried items as well as veggie burgers and salads. The Funatic is open for
social gatherings, recreation, and caterings. Food is served Monday through
Friday from 1100 to 1330. Additional food service hours are as follows: Lunch is
offered Monday through Friday from 1100 to 1330. Evening services run
Tuesday through Wednesday, 1600 to 2000, Thursday, 1600 to 2100, Friday, 1100 to
2300, Saturday, 1200 to 2000, and Sunday, 1300 to 1800. Kitchen
services close 30-minutes prior to closing time. Look for daily
specials.
BETTER OPPORTUNITIES FOR SINGLE SOLDIERS/SERVICE MEMBERS
(BOSS): Supports the overall quality of life issues for single and
unaccompanied service members and is made up of unit representatives. It
supports the chain of command by identifying well being issues and provides
recommendations for improvement and an opportunity for single service members to
participate in community service and recreational programs. Weekly
meetings are open to all single service members.
RELIGIOUS
PROGRAMS: The Chaplain Activities Office has a comprehensive
religious program and invites the post community to become a part of it. Join
the worship, engage in religious education, enjoy fellowship and serve the
community. Stop by anytime at 1776 Ditto Avenue.
PAINT BALL
COURSE: The DMWR Paint Ball Course is located on Area
B. Hours of Operation: Friday: Group Reservations Only,
Saturday and Sunday: 1000-1630.
EQUIPMENT
RENTAL: Rent a wide range of seasonal equipment at the Equipment
Issue Center, located at 1431 Sultan Street, in the Auto Service Center.
Equipment, such as kayaks, mountain bikes, volleyball sets, sleeping bags,
canoes, utility trailers, and more, is available. Hours of operation are Monday,
0900 to 1600, Tuesday - Thursday, 0900 to 2100, Friday and Saturday 0900 to
1700, and closed Sunday.
RECREATIONAL AREA: The
Nallin Farm Recreational Area is open to military and civilian activities and
group picnics. The area is complete with three shelters, a grill pavilion,
horseshoe pits, a stocked trout pond, playground, and bathrooms. The large
pavilion accommodates 150-175 people and the two smaller ones up to
50. Groups must reserve the area seven days in advance by contacting
the Directorate of Morale, Welfare, and Recreation. Hours of
operation 0730-1600 (Monday - Friday). At large gatherings, alcoholic beverages
are permitted upon approval by the commander. Otherwise, they are
prohibited.
FISHING: The Nallin Farm Pond provides an
excellent opportunity for those who like to fish. The pond is stocked with trout
several times throughout the year. Fishing is open to active duty and retired
military, federal civilian employees and contractors at Fort Detrick. The
installation commander may make special exceptions. A Maryland fishing license
is required. Children under age 16 are not required to have a
Maryland fishing license; however, a licensed adult must accompany
them. Fort Detrick fishing and hunting permits are required and may
be obtained at the Provost Marshal Office, 1504 Porter Street.
AUTO
SHOP: The Automotive Skills Center is located at 1431 Sultan Street.
The center is available for the "do-it-yourselfer," or the person who wants to
learn new skills by having access to the proper equipment to do minor
repairs. The center is open Monday from 0900 to 1630, Tuesday through
Thursday from 0900 to 2100, Friday and Saturday from 0900 to 1700, and is closed
Sunday. Lift fees are $3 per hour and flat bay fees are $2. Used oil is not
accepted at this facility.
INDIVIDUAL SKILL (ART)
CENTER: The Individual Skills (Arts) Center, located at 839 Chandler
Street, consists of a Matting and Framing Shop and Woodworking Shop. Both are
available to all Fort Detrick personnel and their family members, as well as
other Defense Department personnel.
The Woodworking Shop is open Wednesday
through Friday, 1400 to 2000 and Saturday and Sunday, 0900 to 1700. A Master
Craftsman operates the facility, and classes are held monthly for special
projects. Projects are decided based on customer needs and inquiries.
The Matting and Framing Shop is open extended hours Tuesday and
Wednesday, 1400 to 2100, Thursday, 1700 to 2100, Friday, 1000 to 1700, and
Saturday, 0900 to 1700. Classes are offered monthly or as requested by patrons.
Matting and Framing can be accomplished as a self-help project or for a nominal
fee by a master framer.
THINGS TO DO FOR THE YOUTH:
YOUTH
SERVICES (YS): Welcome to the Fort Detrick Middle School and Teen
program! Youth Services offers age appropriate programs and
activities for youth. The Middle School/Junior Teen Program offers programs for
youth 6th through 8th grade. The Teen Program offers activities for youth 9th
through 12th grade. Youth Services sponsors a variety of programs
offering youth opportunities in life skills; citizenship and leadership;
leisure, recreation and arts; and mentoring, intervention and support
services.
YOUTH CENTER (Sky Dome) is the place to go for
youths in grades 1-12 to enjoy activities such as video games, billiards,
pinball, foosball, Nintendo, board games, table games, dances, contests, special
events, tournaments, and theme parties. A wealth of creative,
supervised youth activities are available through the Youth Center for youth in
grades 1-12, on post. The activities are designed to be fun, promote
physical fitness, and develop lifelong recreation
skills.
SUMMER PROGRAMS:
Kindergarten
Camp: The Fort Detrick Child Development Center (CDC) offers a
Kindergarten Camp for children who have completed kindergarten during the
2005-2006 school year. Camp provides children with many wonderful
activities, presentations, and field trips to entertain and delight. There will
be special presentations, field trips, and trips to the Fort Detrick Pool for
recreational swimming.
Summer Day Camp: For youth
who have completed grades 1-5. Summer Day Camp is broken down into 10 one week
programs. Children will be broken up into 3 age groups. An example of a typical
week is below. Activities will also be provided within the four service areas of
health, life skills, intervention, and recreation.
X-Treme
Camp: The Youth Services Teen X-Treme Camp is for youth who have
completed grades 6-12 and it is designed to reduce at risk behaviors by offering
young people inviting and self rewarding activities. Youth enrolled in this
program will have an option of participating in a Home Base Camp or a High
Adventure Camp.
