There are two geographically separated locations served by this
installation. These locations are: 5th Ranger Training Bn, Dahlonega,
Georgia and 6th Ranger Training Bn, Eglin AFB, Florida. (Note: Soldiers and
families assigned to Eglin AFB are eligible to use the support services at that
installation).
CAMP FRANK D. MERRILL: THE 5TH RANGER TRAINING
BATTALION MISSION:
The 5th Ranger Training
Battalion mission is to train critical combat arms related functional skills to
develop the Ranger's student's ability to lead small unit operations in close
combat, direct fire battle on mountainous
terrain.
Ranger Instructor
Mission: Teach, coach, mentor, facilitate after action reviews,
counsel and last of all evaluate. RI's show Ranger students the right
way to train, the right way to lead, the right way to conduct platoon operations
on mountainous terrain. RI's set the example in everything they do,
and gain the confidence and respect of the students under their
charge.
The Ranger Camp and the Ranger personnel
and their families are an integral part of Lumpkin County. Porter
Village, a military housing area lies just West of the city of Dahlonega sharing
many of the cultural aspects of the surrounding area.
Dahlonega, GA
(Lumpkin County) has a small airport for private planes on Camp Waseca
Road. The nearest commercial air service is Hartsfield International
Airport in Atlanta, Georgia, about 90 minutes away.
Dahlonega
is where a child can receive quality education from Kindergarten through college
without leaving the area. The Georgia Accrediting commission
accredits all the four schools in the Lumpkin County area. Lumpkin
County is also the home of North Georgia College, a four year college that's
part of the University of Georgia. This college offers a vast array
of course studies with many continuing education classes.
Residents of
Dahlonega can choose a place to worship from 20 churches representing eleven
denominations.
Government Quarters are available, however some soldiers
with families can rent or buy homes in the local area. Camp Merrill
has a Post Exchange and Commissary. If there is an item that is not
on the shelf, check with the staff to see if this item can be a special
order. There is a large commisary at Fort Gillem in Atlanta,
Georgia
