NAVY DETACHMENT YAKIMA, YAKIMA RESEARCH STATION is 142 road miles and 2 3/4 hours from Everett.

1. Yakima, the county seat of Yakima County, is situated in
south-central Washington.  The city is 145 miles southeast of Seattle, 201 miles southwest of Spokane, 146 miles south of the Canadian border, 180 miles northeast of Portland, Oregon and 91 miles north of the Washington-Oregon border.  The city is the 7th most populated city in Washington, with a population (including surrounding suburbs) of about 110,000.  it lies in the Yakima Valley, an area of rich volcanic soil, at an altitude of 1,068 feet.  Yakima's climate, location, and excellent facilities combine to provide visitors and residents alike with an endless variety of cultural, recreational, and entertainment opportunities.  In Yakima and surrounding areas there are numerous parks and open spaces, swimming pools, golf courses, libraries, and both casual and fine restaurants; and there are scores of fraternal organizations, hobby clubs, and other organizations catering to a wide range of interests.  Some of the most spectacular scenery in North America -- including Mt. Rainier and Mt. Adams -- can be seen from the Yakima Valley.  The openness of the valley provides a stark contrast to more heavily developed metropolitan areas.

2. NSGD Yakima is part of the Yakima Research Station (YRS) and is located at the U.S. Army's Yakima Training Center (YTC).  Points of contact are the OIC and AOIC, DSN: 638-3460 x157 or Comm: (509)457-6775 x157.  YTC is situated approximately six miles north of Yakima off Interstate 82.  A sub-installation of Fort Lewis, Washington, the
training center (also called the firing range) covers 320,000 acres, ranking it as one of the largest military posts in the United States.  At the present time it has a garrison of about 86 military members and 100 civilians.

3.  The installation is used for training purposes by troops from all over the United States, Canada, and the Untied Kingdom.  The desert-like terrain of the installation is ideal for artillery, tank, mortar, recoilless weapons, and small arms training.  The bulk of training for Active Army, Reserve, ROTC, National Guard, and Marine Corps units is conducted during the summer months.  Command training and staff functions are exercised by the garrison throughout the year.  The Yakima Training Center does not have the size and variety of support
facilities that exist on larger installations like a major NAVSTA, but there are several small facilities at the training center that are available for use by civilian and military employees at the YRS.  The Training Center's Club offers limited meals and bar service, the recreation facility is available for individual use and league play, and the post craft shop (providing limited auto, rock, and wood workshops) is available to interested YRS employees.

4.  One important service that the training center has begun providing to YRS employees is assistance with tracking and arranging for delivery of household goods.  Your household goods will be stored for you temporarily while you locate and obtain your permanent housing.  Your local transportation office should provide you with complete
information concerning your shipping entitlements and the periods of time and conditions under which your household goods can be stored at government expense.  Once you know when you will be ready to accept delivery of your household goods, you can contact the training center at (509)577-3222 to help arrange delivery.  Ft. Lewis handles military HHG arrangements.  You will be given additional information and assistance on making these arrangements during check-in at NSGD Yakima/YRS.
