A military member, regardless of rank/grade is, in accordance
with the Joint Federal Travel Regulation, Vol. I, paragraph U5410, authorized to
ship One POV at government expense to their overseas PDS. Shipment is
authorized from a Military Traffic Management Command Water Port (WP) or a
Vehicle Processing Center (VPC) which has responsibility for the overseas
country. Please contact your origin TMO for the authorized WP or VPC
servicing Alaska.
NOTE: Active duty members may ship 1 POV
through an authorized Vehicle Processing Center. This is considered a
shipping entitlement.
Active duty members may also drive the ALCAN
highway or utilize the Alaska Marine Highway for additional 2 vehicles per
active duty member. This is considered a travel
entitlement.
For example: SSgt Doe is married to Jane. SSgt
Doe ships one vehicle through an authorized VPC. He drives his motor
home up the ALCAN Highway while Jane follows him in their
Blazer. SSgt Doe utilized his shipping entitlement as well as his
travel entitlement. For more travel entitlement information contact
your local Traffic Management Office. See CONTACTS for information on
Anchorage VPC.
Be advised that a complete inspection of your vehicle
should be made at the time of pickup; carefully note all damage on the DD Form
788, "Application for the Shipments of a POV". Proper documentation
of any damages will help if a claim must be filed. Do not allow the
inspector to rush you through the inspection process.
