for websites. An applicant for an original Alaska driver license must
be at least 16 years of age and have held a valid driving permit for a minimum
of 6 months. If an applicant is under 18 years of age, they must have parental
consent to obtain a license. An applicant is required to furnish two pieces of
identification, one to prove date of birth and one to prove identity.
You can use your valid out-of-state / country license to drive in
Alaska, provided you are at least 16 years of age. If you will be
driving in Alaska for more than 90 days, you are required to obtain an Alaska
driver license within that 90 day time period. (If you have a
commercial driver license, you must obtain an Alaska license within 30 days of
your arrival.)
MANDATORY VEHICLE INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE TESTS (IM
TESTS)
All vehicles with gasoline engines driven in the Municipality of
Anchorage on a regular basis must pass a Vehicle Inspection and Maintenance (IM)
test regardless where the vehicle is registered. The test is required
within 30 days after the vehicle arrives in the state. Tests

Mandatory Insurance
The Mandatory Insurance Statutes
require that the owner of a motor vehicle subject to registration have a
liability insurance policy in effect that complies with AS 28.22.101. The
minimum amounts for this policy are $50,000/$100,000 for bodily injury or death
and $25,000 for property damage. Failure to have the proper insurance may result
in a suspension of a driver's license.
Proof of motor vehicle liability
insurance must be in the person's possession at all times when driving a motor
vehicle, and they must present the proof for inspection upon demand of a peace
officer or other authorized representative of the Department of Public Safety.
Your vehicle may be impounded in the Municipality of Anchorage if you do not
have proof of insurance. In this case, you would need to contact the
Anchorage Police Department for procedures on obtaining your vehicle.
