Alaska Driver's License: For detailed information see CONTACTS for websites.  An applicant for an original Alaska driver license must be at least 16 years of age and have held a valid driving permit for a minimum of 6 months. If an applicant is under 18 years of age, they must have parental consent to obtain a license. An applicant is required to furnish two pieces of identification, one to prove date of birth and one to prove identity.

You can use your valid out-of-state / country license to drive in Alaska, provided you are at least 16 years of age.  If you will be driving in Alaska for more than 90 days, you are required to obtain an Alaska driver license within that 90 day time period.  (If you have a commercial driver license, you must obtain an Alaska license within 30 days of your arrival.)

MANDATORY VEHICLE INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE TESTS (IM TESTS)

All vehicles with gasoline engines driven in the Municipality of Anchorage on a regular basis must pass a Vehicle Inspection and Maintenance (IM) test regardless where the vehicle is registered.  The test is required within 30 days after the vehicle arrives in the state.  Tests performed in other states are not valid.  Elmendorf AFB is considered with in the Municipality of Anchorage.  See CONTACTS for websites.

LAWS THAT AFFECT TEEN DRIVERS: See CONTACTS for website.

Mandatory Insurance

The Mandatory Insurance Statutes require that the owner of a motor vehicle subject to registration have a liability insurance policy in effect that complies with AS 28.22.101. The minimum amounts for this policy are $50,000/$100,000 for bodily injury or death and $25,000 for property damage. Failure to have the proper insurance may result in a suspension of a driver's license.

Proof of motor vehicle liability insurance must be in the person's possession at all times when driving a motor vehicle, and they must present the proof for inspection upon demand of a peace officer or other authorized representative of the Department of Public Safety. Your vehicle may be impounded in the Municipality of Anchorage if you do not have proof of insurance.  In this case, you would need to contact the Anchorage Police Department for procedures on obtaining your vehicle.
