A joint use civil/military airport, Ellington Field was acquired by the City of Houston in 1984 and now supports the operations of the United States military, NASA, and a variety of general aviation tenants. The airport is home to the annual Wings Over Houston Airshow and is also the place where many of the astronauts from the world-renowned Johnson Space Center receive their ongoing space training.

Ellington Field is operated and maintained by the Houston Airport System, the fourth largest multi-airport system in the nation and the sixth largest in the world, which functions as an enterprise fund of the City of Houston and does not burden the local tax base for airport operations, maintenance, or capital improvements. Instead, the Houston Airport System serves the fourth largest city in the nation as an international gateway to the rest of the world and as a major source of economic vitality.

Approximately 15 miles south of downtown Houston, Ellington Field is located off of I-45/Gulf Freeway, the major highway heading from the City to NASA and Galveston Island.
