In addition to shopping in Fairbanks and North
Pole, Anchorage offers a wide selection of shopping centers and
malls. It is not uncommon to drive to Anchorage for a weekend of
shopping. Usually billeting at either Fort Richardson or Elemendorf
can accommodate you with a lovely inexpensive room. Fort Wainwright
and Eielson both offer shopping trips (for spouses only) during
April. Services on Eielson and Army Community Services on Fort
Wainwright sponsor what is known as "Breakaway". Spouses stay at Fort
Richardson or Elemendorf and the entire weekend (leave on Thursday and return on
Sunday) is planned with shopping trips. It really is a great
time.
There is no sale tax for items purchased in Fairbanks, but there is
a local sale tax in the city limits of North Pole.
Major stores in

it, buy it when you see it or it will be gone.
