Affordable off-station civilian housing in the Monmouth County
area is in short supply. It is recommended that you wait until
on-station housing is available before moving your family here. If
you do not wish to wait for Military Family Housing, the Housing Referral Office
(HRO) can assist in locating off-station housing, but keep in mind the expenses
associated with starting a lease (security deposits, temporary lodging,
etc.).
The Housing Referral Office will assist personnel in locating
suitable, non-discriminatory off-station housing. Rental, sale
listings and referral counseling services are available to prospective military
tenants. Service members are required, pursuant to DOD directives, to
contact the HRO prior to negotiating a civilian housing agreement for
off-station housing in the local community. Visiting the HRO prior to
negotiating a civilian housing agreement assures compliance with directives and
familiarizes the service member or family member with local civilian housing
practices and policies.
A one (1) year lease is usually required for
rental properties, however, there are limited possibilities of renting on a
monthly basis or short term lease.
A security deposit equivalent to one
and a half (1 1/2) months rent and one (1) months advance rent is usually
required. If a realtor or rental agent is used, they may ask for a
finder's fee, however most landlords pay this fee. A fee is normally
charged if an applicant credit check is required by the rental
agent.
There are very few mobile home parks that will accept privately
owned mobile homes. If interested, please call the Family Housing
Welcome Center at 1-800-987-4775 to determine the availability of mobile home
spaces in military and civilian mobile home parks.
