The USO in Boston has free or
reduced tickets for area theater, sports and other events. Check with

Army Community
Service maintains listings of local and regional community events occurring
throughout the year. There are wide ranges of recreational opportunities
available in the area, including parks, state forests, canoeing and kayaking,
whitewater rafting, horseback riding, roller-skating, bicycle riding, fishing,
and local maple syruping. Many ski areas are also located not too
distant from the Devens area. Army Community Service has information
on many other activities.
Two excellent resources to check are Mr.
Cheap's Guide to Boston (available for checkout) and Places to Go with Children
in New England. ACS sponsors a wide variety of cultural/social/recreational
opportunities in the surrounding communities, year round. Central and
Eastern Massachusetts are densely populated and offer much to do with
free time. Army Community Service has pamphlets on sightseeing in
Massachusetts, with its rich historical tradition, and activities happening in
communities around Eastern and Central MA all year round. Sports
teams on all levels including professional, museums, professional theater,
scenic lakes/mountains/beaches, fishing, music and dance, to name a few, are
here waiting for you.
While at Devens, sports fans can enjoy the Boston
Red Sox for baseball, New England Patriot's for football, Boston Celtics for
basketball and Boston Bruins for hockey.

Center Enlisted Club, Officer's Club and Flight Training Center.

social and cultural events taking place, year round, in the Massachusetts and
New England area. Local newspapers carry information on sports club
and social activities in their area. Each community offers town
government sponsored activities for youngsters at minimal
expense. These activities will vary from town to
town. Local public school systems offer after school clubs, social
activities, and sports during the school year. There are always a
wide variety of activities to choose from in the Boston, MA metropolitan area,
which are advertised each Thursday in a special supplement to the Boston Globe
newspaper. Downtown Boston is a 45 minute drive from Devens during
non-rush hour times and weekends. New England offers one of the best winter
climates for family skiing and recreation. Nearly all area towns have
active, year round sports programs for their residents. Which sports
are offered depend on the town of residence. There is usually a small
fee for participation. Sports and recreation programs being offered
and arrangements for participation are advertised in local
newspapers. Anyone wishing information on local sports and recreation
programs should call the town office responsible for these activities in their
town/city, usually located in town/city hall. Sports activities
normally make use of municipal and public school facilities, at little or no
charge to participants.
A wide variety of summer fun is available due to

Many area churches offer
programs of religious instruction and social activities for young
people. Individuals should check with the church of their choice
concerning programs available. There is one youth or teen center on Devens
organized by the town of Harvard which will organize
activities. Information will be published as soon as center
opens.
However, there are many special events going on all year long in
the Central/Eastern MA area. Brochures are available at Army
Community Service listing special events in this area and across the state, and
newspapers list activities for their circulation area. Schools,
churches, social and other community organizations offer special events in each
Massachusetts community throughout the year. Watching the local
newspaper is a good way to find out about such events, as is looking through
brochures available at Army Community Service. Massachusetts is the
host state for the Special Olympics Program.
