Davis-Monthan Air Force Base is located in the United States Southwest, in Tucson, Arizona. The area has a large population of military and retired personnel, with additions of aerospace industry, and those associated with flight, like the Pima Air and Space Museum and Evergreen, where passenger aircraft are renovated for company and personal sale. While the area has a higher cost than perhaps the Central South, costs are much less than those found on the far West coast. The mountains and desert scenery are a good mix and provide a beautiful backdrop to this enthusiastic base.
HISTORY
The base was activated in 1924. Charles Lindbergh officially conducted the base opening ceremonies. The base was named for two local early aviators, who died in separate flight accidents; 1st Lt Samuel H. Davis, killed December 22, 1921, and 2nd Lt Oscar Monthan, killed March 27, 1924.
MISSION
The 355th Wing falls under 12th Air Force, headquartered at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona and Air Combat Command, headquartered at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia.
The wing's mission is to deploy, employ and sustain expeditionary combat and combat support forces while enabling critical JFACC and HLS operations.
POPULATION SERVED
Davis-Monthan Air Force base is surrounded by a very supported and friendly community of retirees and supporters of airpower. It is inevitable that, regardless of where you live you will have a military or retiree neighbor.
As a host to 12AF, we have active duty members of all ranks, from General down to Airman. We also have a large and active corps of civil service employees who diligently support the active duty members of the base through their day-to-day efforts, not to mention the outstanding work accomplished when numerous people are deployed from the base at a time.
Families are an integral part of our community, and many tasks wouldn't be supported or completed without their help. Opportunities for volunteering as well as some federal jobs are available.
Joint service events are becoming more popular with Navy, Marine Corps and Army detachments nearby. And an Air Force ROTC unit from the University of Arizona is attached to Davis-Monthan.
SPONSORSHIP
Davis-Monthan has a very active sponsorship program. The 355th Wing commander directs that every member inbound to Davis-Monthan has a sponsor, and that the sponsor is a supervisor level member. This ensures adequate and accurate information to the member. All of these personnel also require training from the Relocation Manager at Family Support.
The unit should contact you with your sponsor's information as soon as they learn you are coming. If not, contact the Relocation Manager at the Family Support Center found in contacts/links and they will make the unit contact for you. We highly recommend having a sponsor so that you can learn as much about the base and your unit as possible before arriving.
Sponsor or not, all personnel should report to the 24-hour arrival point in billeting before going to their unit orderly room as soon as the duty day allows. There you can make arrangements for leave, housing, etc. with the unit's assistance. But do not send your personal mail to the unit. Forward all mail to:

CRITICAL INSTALLATION INFORMATION
With the largely supportive community here in Arizona, it is unlikely that Davis-Monthan will be affected by BRAC any time in the near future. In fact, the base continues to grow with new facilities, housing, and family-oriented spaces. Enjoy your time at Davis-Monthan AFB. Desert Lightning . . . . Strikes!!
