National, state, and local organizations provide a wide range of
volunteer opportunities in the local community. Many opportunities
for individual or local community involvement are just a phone call
away. Getting involved in your new community is a great way to learn
new skills, get to know your new neighbors, become acclimated to your
surroundings, and making a difference in the lives of
others.
Volunteerism in the local community supports aging populations,
mentors youth, strengthens families, builds strong and safe neighborhoods,
provides emergency food and shelter, and supports local human service programs.
Other national volunteer agencies include: American Red Cross, The United Way,
Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America.
Remember too that the
Fleet & Family Support Center looks for volunteers for our
programs. The FFSC can assist you in locating volunteer opportunities
with local businesses and non-profit organizations in the local
area. Any time you volunteer, you increase your chances of getting a
permanent paying job either with the organization where you volunteer or because
of the good job training you may be getting through your volunteer
job.
