Jobs on the installation are very competitive which is why the Spouse Employment counselor at the Fleet & Family Support Center is an ideal resource for your employment assistance.

FFSC SPOUSE EMPLOYMENT SERVICES
The Fleet & Family Support Center Spouse Employment Counselor provides services and programs for spouses that include:  job search skill development, individual employment counseling, job internet resources, employment education classes and workshops, job referrals, and access to computers and the internet.

Family members may receive assistance with many aspects of the employment process such as identifying interests and strengths, training/education opportunities, licensing needed for particular careers, resume development, interviewing, follow-up letters and networking.

FFSC TRANSITION ASSISTANCE SERVICES
The Fleet and Family Support Center Transition Assistance Management Program (TAMP) assists active duty military members with employment resources and job search services prior to retirement or separation from the military. Employment informational resources used by the Transition Office are also available to spouses.

HUMAN RESOURCES OFFICE (HRO)
The installation Human Resources Office is also a source of Federal civil service employment information for family members seeking employment.  Their employment counselors can explain the spouse preference guidelines.

SPOUSE EMPLOYMENT PREFERENCE FOR APPROPRIATED FUND JOBS
Spouse preference for federal civil service positions is afforded through the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.  In order to be eligible, the spouse must be already serving on an excepted appointment overseas or on a career or career-conditional appointment at the time the PCS orders are issued.  The spouse must be placed on leave without pay or be separated from their appointment due to the PCS in order to receive spouse preference priority placement consideration.  Registration for departing spouses may be accomplished 30 days prior to sponsor's reporting date at the new duty location.

SPOUSE EMPLOYMENT PREFERENCE FOR NON-APPROPRIATED FUND  Spouse employment preference will be given to eligible spouses of active duty military members.  To be eligible, the spouse must be married to the military sponsor before the military member was assigned to the current duty station.  To receive spouse preference, the applicant must submit a copy of the sponsor's PCS orders and a copy of the marriage certificate.  Non-appropriated fund positions on base are located in the MWR facilities such as the Child Care Center, Base Gym, and other MWR departments.

EMPLOYMENT OPTIONS
Federal employment on the installation is very competitive due to a low turnover rate of federal employees, requirement for highly specialized jobs, budget cuts and contracting out government jobs.  Types of jobs at Dahlgren are jobs for engineers, scientists, mathematicians, computer specialists, accounting and finance, budget analysts and some administrative support positions.

EMPLOYMENT DOCUMENTATION
For job-hunting purposes, be sure to hand carry school transcripts, updated resume and/or RESUMIX for federal jobs.  Have on hand the name, address and telephone number of three references, professional certificates, special awards or honors, letters of recommendation, and volunteer career information.

FOREIGN-BORN SPOUSE
If you are a foreign-born spouse coming from an overseas location and you have education transcripts and employment documentation not in English, it is advisable to have those documents translated into English prior to your arrival at Dahlgren.

UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS
If you are considering applying for unemployment benefits, contact your losing unemployment benefits representative for the appropriate paperwork.  When you resign your position, include a statement to the effect that you are resigning to accompany your military spouse on his/her Permanent Change of Station assignment.
