Military Personnel:
If you are an active-duty member of
the Armed Forces stationed in Virginia, you, your spouse, and dependent children
16 years and 3 months of age or older may drive with a valid driver's license
issued by your home state or country. Vehicles registered in your
name may be driven with valid out-of-state license plates if you are the sole
owner. If the vehicle is co-owned, all co-owners must be active-duty
members of the Armed Forces. You may register your vehicle in
Virginia without obtaining a Virginia driver's license.
The
term vehicle includes motorcycles, automobiles, trailers, vans, and boats
regularly parked or garaged overnight in Virginia. If you establish
residency in Virginia, you are required to title and register at one of the
Virginia Department of Motor Vehicle Offices.
VEHICLE
REGISTRATION:
To register your vehicle in Virginia you need to bring a
title and complete an Application for Registration.
Vehicle
Registration Fees:
Passenger Vehicles - determined by model year of
vehicle. The range is from $29.50 to $34.50.
Trucks - Determined
by the gross weight.
Motorcycle - $27.50
Title Fee - $10.00
License Fee
- $10.00
Photo ID - $10.00
Vehicle Sales Tax - There is a minimum charge
of $35.00.
VEHICLE INSPECTION:
Before registering your
vehicle in Virginia, the vehicle must pass a safety inspection and emission
inspection. You must have proof of insurance at time of
inspection. Vehicle inspections are required annually and can be
obtained at a certified Virginia inspection station (most service
stations).
VEHICLE INSURANCE:
Virginia is considered a
tort state, which means that drivers bear financial responsibility for any
damage and injury they cause in an accident. Most drivers fulfill
this responsibility by purchasing Virginia auto insurance. Virginia
law requires the following minimum insurance coverage:
Bodily
injury/death of one person - $25,000
Bodily injury/death of two or more
persons - $50,000
Property damage - $20,000
DRIVER'S LICENSE -
Adults
Military personnel and family members, please read first paragraph
in this section regarding your exemption status.
If you are a
Virginia resident, 19 years of age or older, you must hold a Virginia learner's
permit for at least 30 days or show completion of a state-approved driver
education program.
DRIVER'S LICENSE - Teens
You must
be a resident of the Commonwealth of Virginia and at least 16 years and 3 months
of age to obtain a Virginia driver's license. To obtain a learner's
permit, you must be at least 15 years and 6 months of age. No
exceptions will be made to these age requirements. If you are under
age 18, you must provide written consent from one of your parents or your legal
guardian unless you are married. If you are under age 19, you must
complete a state-approved driver education program.
