Teens)
Eligible: Youth of active duty, retired, active
reserve, and DOD civilian employees. Working and/or volunteering allows young
adults to develop new skills and accept greater responsibility. For
information on local job opportunities and assistance completing job
applications, contact the Fleet & Family Support Center at (361)
961-3722/2372.
Most positions will require reliable transportation to and
from work and flexibility regarding work schedules.
The local community
colleges offer various continuing education courses to assist teens in
developing new skills, as well as Tech-prep programs in conjunction with area
high schools to prepare teens for technical careers.
Self-employment is
another option for teens. Babysitting, lawncare, and carwash services
are typically successful for business-minded young adults.
Teens may also
consider volunteering as a way of investigating possible careers, gaining
valuable experience, and developing new skills. For information on
local volunteer opportunities contact the Fleet & Family Support Center
Volunteer Coordinator at (361) 961-3722/2372.

Local teen problems are
handled with a court of their peers. Reduces normal court traffic and
teaches responsibilities. The Coastal Bend area is in some ways like a tropical
paradise. There are lots of places to fish, surf, jet ski, and
sunbathe, as we are located on the Gulf of Mexico.
Most of the towns
around the area are basically rural, but have a lot to offer. To
obtain information on wht's going on in the various communities, you can contact
the local Chamber of Commerce.
A little good news for those tht are
fifteen - in the State of Texas you can obtain a driver's permit and drive a car
as long as there is a licensed driver in the car. When you reach the
age of 16, and after you've taken Driver's Education, you can take your driving
test and written exam at the Department of Public Safety and obtain a driver's
license.
Many of the schools in the area offer after-school activities
such as drama band, and various sports activities. Football is a
"big" sport in South Texas. Please check the Education Section in
your SITES booklet for phone numbers to the various schools.
Are you
interested in acting? The Harbor Playhouse in Corpus Christi offers
an Acting Camp. You can obtain information pertaining to this by
calling (361) 882-5500.
