The Corpus Christi
Independent School District, the largest of five school districts within the
city limits of Corpus Christi, is among the eight largest urban school districts
in Texas. The District has 63 campuses which serve approximately 42,200 students
in prekindergarten through grade 12. An instructional staff of more
than 2,600 classroom teachers is complimented by a support staff of more than
2,000.
There are 11 middle schools in the Corpus Christi ISD. In ethnic
composition the District is approximately 68 percent Hispanic, 26 percent White
and 6 percent Black.
The Middle Schools contain grades 6,7 &
8. One middle school Baker, is part of the Athena Program for gifted
and talented students. Admittance is determined by scores on test
administered in the spring, summer and fall and by teacher
recommendation.
A Special Emphasis School (SES) is located at one middle
school. The SES setting is based on the belief that some students do
best in a highly structured curriculum. Strong emphasis is placed on
basic skills, good citizenship, discipline, and enrichment.

In order to provide consistent data to be used in comparing
school systems, the ranking criteria is based on scores provided by the Texas
Assessment of Academic Skills (TAAS) exit tests. Schools are
EXEMPLARY, RECOGNIZED, ACADEMICALLY ACCEPTABLE or LOW PERFORMING.
Go to
Texas Educational Agency website for accurate and up-to-date information on
school rankings.
EXEMPLARY - at least 90% of all students and each
student group passed each section of the TAAS, which includes reading, writing
and math; a dropout rate of 1% or less for all students and student groups; and
an attendance rate of 94% or more.
RECOGNIZED - at least 75% of all
students and each student group passed each section of the TAAS, which includes
reading, writing and math; a dropout rate of 3.5% or less for all students and
student groups; and an attendance rate of 94% or more.
ACADEMICALLY
ACCEPTABLE - at least 35% of all students and each student group passed each
section of the TAAS, which includes reading, writing and math; a dropout rate of
6% or less for all students and student groups; and an attendance rate of 94% or
more.
LOW PERFORMING - does not meet acceptable standards.
These
TAAS tests are extremely important for all students, expecially the graduating
seniors - in order to graduate a student must pass the TAAS test.
