EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE
No matter how well you've planned,
emergencies do happen. What should you do in case of an emergency
while you are traveling?
In case of an emergency while in route to your
new installation, please contact the nearest base if possible. If
delayed in reporting, contact the nearest installation and/or the base
quarterdeck at (361) 961-2383; DSN: 861-2383. You may also
contact the American Red Cross at toll-free number:
1-877-272-7337.
Navy/Marine Corps Relief Society can provide financial
emergency assistance based upon need, through loans, or, when there is a
particular hardship, grants. Categories of financial assistance
include: Basic living expenses (food, shelter, utilities), medical
not covered by TRICARE/CHAMPUS, dental not covered by FMDP, funeral expenses,
emergency transportation, essential car repairs, pay and allotment problems,
disasters and assistance for widows, mothers and children. The NMCRS
also maintains a food locker for emergencies.
The American Red Cross can
also help in times of emergency. Quick communications with home about
family emergencies is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, ncluding
verification of death or serious illnesses of immediate family, birth
announcements to fathers deployed overseas, and health and welfare reports
resulting from a lcak of communication over a long period of time.
The
American Red Cross also offers financial assistance for military personnel and
their immediate families after normal working hours.

A 24 hour
hotline staffed by volunteers trained to assist with crisis counseling, services
for the sexually assaulted, and assistance for crime victims, individual
counseling and various support groups are available.
