No matter how well you've planned, emergencies do happen.  Things to do in case of an emergency while you're traveling:

First of all, make sure you have all your important papers with you; i.e. medical and dental records, pet health records, and telephone list of important numbers; Commander, Orderly Room, next duty station numbers, insurance company, and roadside assistance.  Do not pack these records in your household goods shipment. A base SITES book contains many of the points of contact you may need in an emergency.

The American Red Cross is always available for emergency aid anywhere you may be.  Contact the American Red Cross (ARC) nearest you for official verification of emergency.  ARC will then contact a Columbus AFB representative.  To contact an ARC representative for Columbus AFB dial toll free 1-877-272-7337.  The Fort Sill, OK, ARC office will route your message to the appropriate authorities at

The following agencies may be able to provide assistance while you're in transit.  Air Force Aid Society (AFAS) can provide financial emergency assistance based upon need.  AFAS assists in the form of an interest free loan, grant, or a combination of both.  Categories of financial assistance include: basic living expenses (food, shelter, utilities), essential vehicle repair, funeral expenses, emergency travel, medical not covered by TRICARE, dental not covered by FMDP, pay and allotment problems, disasters and assistance for widows and retirees.

The American Red Cross can also help in times of emergency.  Quick communications with home about family emergencies is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including verification of death or serious illness of immediate family, birth announcements to fathers deployed overseas, and health and welfare reports resulting from a lack of communication over a long period of time.  For additional information refer to the listings.

EMERGENCY LEAVE PROCEDURES.  If you experience an emergency situation requiring emergency or additional leave, contact the nearest American Red Cross office to verify the emergency and to assist in emergency leave approval.  If additional leave is needed for an unplanned emergency not involving medical or death, contact your last command for a leave extension, or contact the Columbus AFB Command Post.  The command post will be able to assist you with the correct procedures for your situation.
