No matter how well you've planned, emergencies do
happen. Things to do in case of an emergency while you're
traveling:
First of all, make sure you have all your important papers
with you; i.e. medical and dental records, pet health records, and telephone
list of important numbers; Commander, Orderly Room, next duty station numbers,
insurance company, and roadside assistance. Do not pack these records
in your household goods shipment. A base SITES book contains many of the points
of contact you may need in an emergency.

The
American Red Cross is always available for emergency aid anywhere you may
be. Contact the American Red Cross (ARC) nearest you for official
verification of emergency. ARC will then contact a Columbus AFB
representative. To contact an ARC representative for Columbus AFB
dial toll free 1-877-272-7337. The Fort Sill, OK, ARC office will
route your message to the appropriate authorities at
Columbus
AFB. You may also contact your sponsor, first sergeant, or commander
through the Columbus AFB Command Post 662-434-7020; DSN 742-7020; or
1-800-982-4257.
The following agencies may be able to provide assistance
while you're in transit. Air Force Aid Society (AFAS) can provide
financial emergency assistance based upon need. AFAS assists in the
form of an interest free loan, grant, or a combination of
both. Categories of financial assistance include: basic living
expenses (food, shelter, utilities), essential vehicle repair, funeral expenses,
emergency travel, medical not covered by TRICARE, dental not covered by FMDP,
pay and allotment problems, disasters and assistance for widows and
retirees.
The American Red Cross can also help in times of
emergency. Quick communications with home about family emergencies is
available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including verification of death or
serious illness of immediate family, birth announcements to fathers deployed
overseas, and health and welfare reports resulting from a lack of communication
over a long period of time. For additional information refer to the

EMERGENCY LEAVE PROCEDURES. If you experience an
emergency situation requiring emergency or additional leave, contact the nearest
American Red Cross office to verify the emergency and to assist in emergency
leave approval. If additional leave is needed for an unplanned
emergency not involving medical or death, contact your last command for a leave
extension, or contact the Columbus AFB Command Post. The command post
will be able to assist you with the correct procedures for your situation.
