No matter how well you've planned your move, emergencies DO
happen. What should you do in case of an emergency while you are
travelling?
First of all, make sure you have all important papers with
you - not packed with your household goods. Numbers for your
commander (585-6409), first sergeant (585-6509), orderly room (585-6209), and
your sponsor can be invaluable in case of emergency situations while in
transit. In case of an emergency, always make contact with one of
these individuals to let them know what is happening.
The American Red
Cross is always available for emergency aid anywhere you may
be. Contact the nearest chapter (phone numbers are listed in your
local directory) or call 1-877-272-7337. They can sometimes help with
emergency financial assistance and contacting individuals that will need to know
where you are and what's happening.
The Air Force Aid Society (AFAS) can
help you with other financial emergencies. Assistance for a variety
of short-term emergencies are available on a case-by-case basis. Call
the AFAS at your duty station for prompt assistance for emergency
situations. Away from your duty station but near an Air Force Base,
call that base's AFAS office. Away from your duty station and near an
Army Post or Navy Base, contact Army Emergency Relief or Navy
Relief. If not near any military installation, contact the local
American Red Cross.
Plan for the unexpected and it probably won't
happen.
