Safe shelters for victims who choose to leave their abusive partners are usually available either on the installation or in the civilian community. Shelters are intended to provide a short-term safe haven for domestic violence victims and their children. Counseling and other support services are available to assist victims in developing a longer-term plan to ensure their safety and the safety of their children.
My Sister's House, Inc. is a 24 hour telephone crisis counseling center. General and individual counseling is available. They provide a temporary safe shelter from domestic violence for victims and their children.
Charleston Emergency Shelter, Charleston County is an emergency center designed to house abused and abandoned children. All clients must be referred to by the county DSS office and a child can stay no longer than 90 days.
Nehemiah Ministries is a christian based program designed to assist women and children in need with temporary housing, employment and school. There is maximum duration for their stay so long as they are working towards independence. There is a Tue-Thurs after school program 1530-1700 which includes a full meal, homework help and other activities and Sunday school at 1000 (transportation and meal provided if needed).
Women's Shelter, an emergency shelter for women in crisis (mental illness, recovering alcoholics and addicts, parolees). NO CHILDREN. An interview with the staff must be conducted for bed space. This is not a battered woman's shelter.
