NORTH AUXILIARY AIRFIELD--NORTH FIELD,
SC:
North Auxiliary Airfield, North Field, South Carolina is a GSU and an
Operating Location (OL) of the 437th Airlift Wing. Its primary
mission is fire department support training operations involving C-17 units from
Charleston AFB.
The field was selected as the single training site for
the new C-17. In addition to flying units, the field is used 10
months out of the year for ground deployments by various organizations. North
Field is a bare base, with nearly 2300 acres on site (mostly wooded) and few
buildings. The newest building is the fire station.

FORCE COMBAT CLIMATOLOGY CENTER--ASHEVILLE, NC:
The AF Combat Climatology
Center (AFCCC) is a GSU of the 437th Airlift Wing. It is located 260
miles from Charleston and is nestled in beautiful Asheville,
NC.
Mission: The AFCCC develops/produces special
weather-impact information used in planning/executing world-wide military
operations; in the engineering design/employment of weapons systems; and in
weather-sensitive, multi-million dollar national programs controlled by the
Secretary of the Air Force. In addition, the Air Force designated
AFCCC as the DoD's lead for integrating air and space environment information
into future Joint modeling/simulation programs.
Asheville rests on a
high, fertile plateau--an incredibly beautiful region framed by the Blue Ridge
and Great Smoky Mountains of Western North Carolina. It offers a
superb climate which weather experts have rated year-round "best" in the United
States. Spring arrives early with a flood of floral variety, and
Summers are cool with an average temperature of 72
degrees. September, October, and November are flowing, golden months,
with brilliant foliage. Winter offers an invigorating fourth season
with an average temperature of 42. Manmade snow allows skiing on the
East's most southern slopes. Snowfall is heavy in the higher
elevations, but the past 10 year average in Asheville is 12 inches per
year.
Asheville maintains the intimacy and charm of a small city, while
offering the cultural, recreational, and educational opportunities of the
large. Close by are two national forests comprising over one million
acres. Opportunities for outdoor family recreation are
unlimited! The population of Asheville is 68,300, and Buncombe County
174,800.
Medical: Asheville is under TRICARE Standard (Region
2). At present military personnel and families need to be aware of
the TRICARE Standard deductibles--$150/individual or $300/family for E-5 and
above; $50/$100 for E-4 and below. Military members and adult family
members (ages 18-65) can access medical care at the VA Hospital. For

Dental Care: The Active Duty Family
Member Dental Plan (FMDP) is administered by United Concordia Companies,
Inc. Four dentists in the Asheville area subscribe to United
Concordia and are available to provide your dental
care.
Housing: Homes vary in price from
$70,000-$150,000 and even more. Apartment rentals vary from $450-$700
plus, depending on amenities and living space. Home rental costs can
run even higher.
Shopping: There are two major shopping malls
and numerous smaller malls/strip shopping centers available. Since
there's no military base nearby, shopping is done on the local
economy.
Schools: The Asheville city school system has some
5,000 students in six elementary schools, one middle school and one high
school. All Asheville elementary schools are controlled choice with
magnet themes. The Buncombe County systems serves 22,000 students in
20 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, 6 high schools and 4 special
schools.
Colleges & Universities: The campus
of the University of North Carolina at Asheville (telephone: 828-251-6600) is
situated close to the heart of the city on 175
acres. .
Religion: Asheville is well represented by
many churches and religious faiths. There are 12 religious assemblies
in the area.
Recreation: Nine parks provide swimming pools,
tennis courts, picnicking facilities, a nature center and
zoo. Twenty-one summer playgrounds, 8 neighborhood recreation
centers, 2 senior's centers and the A-B Youth Council comprised of high school
students. Two public golf courses and 3 country clubs provide
superior play 10 months of the year. Two great national forests offer
trout and bass fishing, and hiking trails.
