The AF Combat Climatology Center (AFCCC) is a GSU of the 437th Airlift Wing.  It is located 260 miles from Charleston and is nestled in beautiful Asheville, NC.

Asheville rests on a high, fertile plateau--an incredibly beautiful region framed by the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains of Western North Carolina.  It offers a superb climate which weather experts have rated year-round "best" in the United States.  Spring arrives early with a flood of floral variety, and Summers are cool with an average temperature of 72 degrees.  September, October, and November are flowing, golden months, with brilliant foliage.  Winter offers an invigorating fourth season with an average temperature of 42.  Manmade snow allows skiing on the East's most southern slopes.  Snowfall is heavy in the higher elevations, but the past 10 year average in Asheville is 12 inches per year.

Asheville maintains the intimacy and charm of a small city, while offering the cultural, recreational, and educational opportunities of the large.  Close by are two national forests comprising over one million acres.  Opportunities for outdoor family recreation are unlimited!  The population of Asheville is 68,300, and Buncombe County 174,800.

Medical:  Asheville is under TRICARE Standard (Region 2).  At present military personnel and families need to be aware of the TRICARE Standard deductibles--$150/individual or $300/family for E-5 and above; $50/$100 for E-4 and below.  Military members and adult family members (ages 18-65) can access medical care at the VA Hospital.  For more detailed information, call the center or send an email with your questions to afcccdoo@afccc.af.mil.

Dental Care:  The Active Duty Family Member Dental Plan (FMDP) is administered by United Concordia Companies, Inc.  Four dentists in the Asheville area subscribe to United Concordia and are available to provide your dental care.

Housing:  Homes vary in price from $70,000-$150,000 and even more.  Apartment rentals vary from $450-$700 plus, depending on amenities and living space.  Home rental costs can run even higher.

Shopping:  There are two major shopping malls and numerous smaller malls/strip shopping centers available.  Since there's no military base nearby, shopping is done on the local economy.

Schools:  The Asheville city school system has some 5,000 students in six elementary schools, one middle school and one high school.  All Asheville elementary schools are controlled choice with magnet themes.  The Buncombe County systems serves 22,000 students in 20 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, 6 high schools and 4 special schools.

Colleges & Universities:  The campus of the University of North Carolina at Asheville (telephone: 828-251-6600) is situated close to the heart of the city on 175 acres.  .

Religion:  Asheville is well represented by many churches and religious faiths.  There are 12 religious assemblies in the area.

Recreation:  Nine parks provide swimming pools, tennis courts, picnicking facilities, a nature center and zoo.  Twenty-one summer playgrounds, 8 neighborhood recreation centers, 2 senior's centers and the A-B Youth Council comprised of high school students.  Two public golf courses and 3 country clubs provide superior play 10 months of the year.  Two great national forests offer trout and bass fishing, and hiking trails.
