Charleston has travel, tourism and entertainment jobs.  Its ports provide many jobs in shipping.  Most employment in the area is in the trade and service sectors.  Also, the state's medical university and neighboring hospitals provide the area many health-service jobs.  The following employers constitute the top ten employers in the Charleston Metro Region:

Medical University of SC: 8,000 employees; U.S. Navy: 6,000 employees; U.S. Air Force:  5,292 employees; Charleston County School District: 4,865 employees; Berkeley County School District:  3,311 employees; Charleston County Government:  2,243 employees; Trident Health Systems and HCA Div HQ, 2082; Medical University 8200; Roper St. Francis Healthcare 4000; Piggly Wiggly Carolina Co., Inc. 2447; Robert Bosch Corporation, 2062 employees.  Job Service is on-site at the Charleston AFB Family Support Center on Wednesdays from 1000-1200 for walk-ins.  You are encouraged to register with the office which is most convenient to where you live or want to work.  Many of the Charleston area employers only list their vacancies with the Commission.  Job Service will administer whatever tests are required to document your experience.  If you are a veteran or disabled veteran, you should ask for the Veteran's counselor upon arrival, because veterans have designated representatives.  For additional information see "Contacts/Links."
