Military Spouse Preference provides priority in the employment
selection process for military spouses who are relocating as a result of their
military spouse's PCS. Spouses of active duty military members who
are career or career-conditional employees of the Federal Service, or who are
reinstatement eligibles, or who have at least 12 months overseas civil service
credit, may be registered for the Military Spouse Preference
Program. Spouses are encouraged to apply for employment with other
Federal agencies based on the Military Spouse Preference under the Priority
Placement Program. Spouse preference is recognized by DoD only;
spouse placements are very limited now due to mandatory placements of separated
or downgraded employees resulting from the continued downsizing. This
preference for re-employment into the DoD workforce is not applicable for
spouses transferring to the area with a military member on retirement
orders. Spouse preference in hiring can be used only once, so
consider your application for a particular job carefully.
The Spousal
Employment Preference Program is interpreted and administered differently from
base to base. Because of this, it is strongly recommended that the
military spouse contact the program representatives at both the losing and
gaining bases well in advance of their PCS.
